Micafungin noninferior to standard prophylaxis after liver transplantation

Data from the Liver Transplant European Study into the Prevention of Fungal Infection, or TENPIN, suggest that micafungin is noninferior to standard treatments as prophylaxis in liver transplant recipients at high risk for invasive fungal infection. In addition, micafungin (Mycamine, Astellas), an echinocandin drug, was associated with better renal function compared with standard regimens, TENPIN investigators wrote in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Kidney disease on the rise, but patients on dialysis or with transplant living longer

Fewer new cases of end-stage renal disease are being reported in the U.S. and mortality rates are declining, indicating that patients on dialysis or with a kidney transplant are living longer. The trends were revealed by the United States Renal Data System coordinating center, based at the University of Michigan in partnership with Arbor Research Collaborative for Health, in its 2014 annual data report on the state of kidney disease in the U.S.

The math of organ donation: Kidneys are an NP-hard problem

Immigrants in Illinois illegally to get state-funded kidney transplants

A new Illinois law will for the first time provide funding for kidney transplants for immigrants in the state without legal permission, as well as the annual medications needed to maintain the transplanted organs. Since the law went into effect in October, transplant centers in Illinois have been evaluating some of the 686 immigrants here illegally in the state's kidney dialysis program to see whether they are healthy enough to receive kidney transplants and placing some on kidney transplant waiting lists.

Live heart transplant in Bangalore

In a first of its kind in Bangalore, a live heart transplant took place at the BGS Global Hospital. The heart was transported from the MS Ramaiah hospital. The heart belongs to Balaji, who was injured in a road accident on Jan 1 in Bangalore. He was declared brain dead when he was taken to the hospital. That is when his parents decided to donate his heart.

Hypothermic machine preservation facilitates successful transplantation of 'orphan' extended criteria donor livers
American Journal of Transplantation
Hypothermic machine preservation remains investigational in clinical liver transplantation. It is widely used to preserve kidneys for transplantation with improved results over static cold storage. At our center, we have used HMP in 31 adults receiving extended criteria donor livers declined by the originating United Network for Organ Sharing region ("orphan livers"). These cases were compared to ECD SCS cases in a matched cohort study design.
