  2. Click the "Members Only" tab on the left side of the page to view the current list of Special Interest Group (SIG) listservs.
  3. Click the name of the SIG listserv you want to join and you will be directed to a sign-up page.
  4. Enter your name, email address, and a password to join. *Click "Yes" for the "Just get a digest" question to receive one summary email per day rather than an email every time someone posts on the listserv.

Half of donor lungs come from smokers: 20 percent are from people with 20-a-day habits

One in five lung transplant patients are given organs from 20-a-day smokers, research has revealed. Overall, almost a half of donated lungs come from someone who had smoked, according to a major British study. Using lung transplants from smokers is a way of boosting supply as there is a constant shortage of donor organs.

Live kidney donations hit an all-time high in British Columbia

As British Columbia recently released numbers showing a dramatic increase in the number of kidney transplants in 2013, a woman who received that gift 12 years ago wants people to know how much it means to her. "Right now I'm the happiest I've ever been," 37-year-old Olivia Scout said. B.C. now has the highest rate of living organ donations, at 28 donors per million population.

Some receive unnecessary prioritization for liver transplantation

Patients waiting for liver transplants who develop hepatopulmonary syndrome, a lung disorder associated with end-stage liver disease, are eligible to move up on the wait list. In a new paper published in Gastroenterology, however, Penn Medicine researchers argue the so-called "exception points" given to these patients award some HPS patients unnecessary priority over others on the list, which includes about 17,000 patients.

Obese patients with diabetes face higher liver transplant morbidity

Morbidity after liver transplantation increased among obese patients with diabetes, according to researchers. "There is much evidence on post-transplant obesity and metabolic syndrome. However, the impact of pre-transplant obesity, hypertension and coronary artery disease on post-transplant outcomes has received less attention and is the focus of our study," Adam S. J. R. Bartlett, MBChB, PhD, FRACS, of the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit at Auckland City Hospital, said in a press release.

IKEM: Record number of organ transplants

The Czech Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine performed a record number of transplant operations in its history in 2013 in which 420 patients received 459 organs, IKEM director Aleš Herman said. In 39 cases a kidney transplant patient also received another organ, such as pancreas, heart, liver or islets of Langerhans, Herman said.
