From the Executive Director: Carolyn Gaughan, CAE
KAFP
Thank you to all who participated in KAFP's 2014 Advocacy Day on Jan. 22. It was a record-breaking attendance with 91 participants for the activities of the day. A very important concern that was addressed during Advocacy Day was independent practice of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, HB 2251. We have developed talking points that I hope you will use to contact your Senator and Representative.
'Childhood Illness' and 'Preventive Care' are top topic choices for SAM Group Learning Session, but it's not too late to submit your vote
KAFP
KAFP is planning a SAM Group Learning Session on June 4 in Overland Park and requests YOUR preference for topics. So far only 22 have completed the short survey — but there's still time for you to complete it. Go to (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/67L5HH6) to give input on your preference for the SAM Session topic. Here are the rankings so far:
We have a tie between the SAMs on Childhood Illness and Preventive Care in receiving the highest number of #1 rankings.
The SAM on Heart Failure has the highest number of #2 rankings, and interestingly, also the highest number of #3 rankings.
The SAM on Coronary Artery Disease has the highest number of #4 rankings.
And the SAM on Preventive Care has the highest number of #5 rankings. (Interesting, as it is also tied for the highest number of #1 rankings ...)
Give your input before Jan. 31! The SAM receiving the highest ranking will be selected for the June 4 session.

The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry) is a new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) program. It requires all medical examiners (MEs) who wish to perform physical examinations for interstate commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to be trained and certified in FMCSA physical qualification standards. Medical examiners who have completed the training and successfully passed the test are included in an online directory on the National Registry website.

Legislative update — Jan. 24
KAFP
A bill allowing advanced practice registered nurses equal practice scope as family physicians, introduced in 2013, is gaining force in the 2014 Legislature. In prior years, APRNs have sought broader independence and scope of practice, but HB 2251 goes far beyond previous attempts. In fact, it offers a practice scope synonymous with that of physicians and provides no real boundaries to that scope.
