The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Kansas City Regional Office invites you to attend a New Medicare Card Webinar. Recent legislation requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers from all Medicare cards to address the current risk of beneficiary medical identity theft, and to replace the cards with a unique number for each Medicare beneficiary. This webinar will address the new card design, the time frame of the mailings and scenarios, what Medicare beneficiaries should do to ensure they receive their new card, and partner resources to help with education.
The goal of this free webinar is to educate those who serve people with Medicare and their caregivers so they can be a valuable resource on this initiative. Please share this invite with those in your office who will benefit from this information.

On Feb. 14, the FDA approved the first blood test developed to evaluate mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, in adults. The agency's action authorizes Banyan Biomarkers Inc. to begin marketing the diagnostic tool in the United States, according to an FDA news release. Known as Banyan BTI (Brain Trauma Indicator), the new test measures levels of two protein biomarkers — ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase-L1 and glial fibrillary acidic protein — that are released from the brain into blood within 12 hours of head injury. Levels of these blood proteins after mTBI can help predict which patients may have intracranial lesions visible by CT scan and which won't, said the agency.
The FDA said currently, most patients with suspected head injury are examined using the 15-point Glasgow Coma Scale. Patients then undergo a CT scan of the head to detect brain tissue damage or intracranial lesions that could require treatment. In most cases, patients evaluated for mTBI with CT scan don't have detectable intracranial lesions. According to the agency, these findings show that health care professionals can start using the tool to rule out the need for CT scan in at least one-third of patients suspected of having mTBI.
Suicide rate highest in decades, worse in rural areas

The latest CDC data shows the 2016 national age-adjusted suicide rate reached the highest level seen in decades, with rural America sustaining the largest increases. The aggregate suicide rate for counties outside of metropolitan areas climbed about 14 percent over the five-year period ending in 2016, with Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming recording the highest rates. By comparison, the rate within metro areas increased by 8 percent. Gun ownership, which is more prevalent in rural areas, explains why certain regions have higher suicide rates. Firearms account for about half of all suicide deaths.
