Making 'common core' tests accessible to all students

The idea of a set of interoperability technology standards that permit states to share data and test items across states and that enables the tagging of test content in a way to make test questions more accessible to different kinds of English-language learners and students with disabilities got a lot of play yesterday in a public meeting about the tests being developed for the states' common-core academic standards. At Bridges Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., inclusion is more than a policy, it is a practice. About 25 percent of Bridges’' students have learning disabilities, a higher percentage than other schools, according to the D.C. Public Charter School Board. Betsy Clyde Santofanti, chairwoman of the Bridges School Board, said the school is structured to meet each child's needs. Study: Poor, rural families need support for special needs students

Researchers are offering advice for working with special needs or low-income students in rural areas: Provide special programs for female students with disabilities, consider the hardships of low-income families when creating family involvement programs, and advocate for anti-poverty programs. Study finds genetic links between ADHD, other neurological disorders

A new study has found that many different rare genetic variants are responsible for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. And on top of that, the same genes associated with ADHD have also been linked to other neurological disorders. Public middle school educators in Prince Georges, Md., hope an intense focus on data analysis and an increase in after-school learning opportunities will increase standardized test scores after all but one failed to achieve state benchmarks in 2011 for proficiency in math and reading. State middle schools have not made Adequate Yearly Progress in math in the special education subgroup since 2008. More
