The U.S. has announced that it will introduce import tariffs on certain foreign-manufactured products. The products in question are specifically solar panels and washing machines, the trump Administration confirmed. The tariff will be implemented through a Section 201 safeguard clause, due to imported products being a substantial cause of serious injury to domestic manufacturers.
Beijing will shut 1,000 manufacturing companies by 2020 under a years-long plan to restructure its economy, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a city official. The closures are part of a bigger initiative to balance and integrate the economies of the cities of Beijing, Tianjin and the surrounding Hebei province. The plan will also involve the construction of Xiongan, a new development in Hebei.
Manufacturing optimization, higher levels of customization, additional, complementary services and flexibility are every bit as important as developing new products and entering new markets. And yet, nearly two-thirds of SME manufacturers state that implementing digital — or Fourth Industrial Revolution-related — technology isn't a priority for their business.
The New York Times
A decade after the world descended into a devastating economic crisis, a key marker of revival has finally been achieved. Every major economy on earth is expanding at once, a synchronous wave of growth that is creating jobs, lifting fortunes and tempering fears of popular discontent. No tidy, all-encompassing narrative explains how the world has finally escaped the global downturn.
The U.S. economy expanded at a slower-than-projected pace in the fourth quarter on drags from trade and inventories, offsetting strength in consumer spending and business investment that signals solid momentum entering 2018. Gross domestic product rose at a 2.6 percent annualized rate after 3.2 percent in the prior period, Commerce Department data showed on Jan. 26.
The Department of Energy has launched a $3 million prize competition aimed at invigorating the United States' solar manufacturing sector just days after President Trump announced a 30 percent tariff on imported crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules and cells.
