    MDNA Government Affairs Update
    MDNA
As we reported in December, the American Taxpayer Relief Act that increased the maximum amount and phase-out threshold in 2012 and 2013 for small businesses expensing under Section 179 to $500,000 expired Dec. 31. The expensing limit has now reverted back to just $25,000. Our lobbying partner, the National Association of Manufacturers, reports that "As of now, both of the Congressional tax writing committees are almost exclusively focused on comprehensive tax reform and have not turned to the question of what to do with these provisions and the others that are traditionally included in the so-called 'extenders' package."

How reliable are ISM manufacturing readings? Not very
    Market Watch
Claims of an American manufacturing renaissance have been getting monthly injections of jet fuel lately from the Institute for Supply Management. Its surveys of domestic industry's health have been generating encouragingly strong numbers since the U.S. economic recovery began in mid-2009. More specifically, the ISM's headline figures signal that American manufacturing has not simply staged a cyclical comeback from a deep recessionary dive but has been strengthening independent of the broader economy's fortunes.

Made in Cleveland again: Manufacturing makes a comeback in Northeast Ohio
    Plain Dealer
High-tech and healthcare companies are key engines in the new economy, but so too are venerable manufacturers with a new spring in their step, Northeast Ohio is finding. Factory work, with a dash of innovation, has re-emerged as a strong player in the region's economic mix, according to a study released recently.

Experience and skills are no match for talent
    By Mel Kleiman
Human knowledge is now doubling every 3.7 years. This means 50 percent of what you now know will be out of date in less than four years. Just to bring it home, let's imagine you need open heart surgery. How would you like to have it performed by someone who hadn't learned anything new about the procedure in the past 48 months? For this reason, it is no longer about hiring skills and/or experience. Today, it's all about hiring talent. So, what is the difference?

Walmart's manufacturing dream is just a dream
    Forbes
Walter Loeb writes, "We all have applauded Walmart's effort to bring manufacturing back the United States. Unfortunately, as I wrote in a recent blog, the results are meager so far. Now a Walmart Foundation has infused $10 million to jump start the effort. The funding is for a five year period. While noble and noteworthy, it seems like a very small amount from a company with $466 billion dollars in sales worldwide and operating income of over $30 billion. Then again, something is better than nothing."

    Business 2 Community
Pinterest has really taken off in last few years but in 2013 it really pulled off and joined the league of the top social media channels — i.e Facebook and Google — which is spectacular for a website which is yet to generate a revenue from the website. What was considered as a website for sharing and curating wedding pictures and recipes have now emerged as a major contender in social media space, particularly in the eCommerce and retail business. If that fact wasn't enough to convince you of the power of Pinterest, Omnicore has designed this infographic.

Great Britain manufacturing grows in January as expansion cools
    Bloomberg
U.K. manufacturing expanded at a slower pace in January as domestic demand and rising export orders underpinned growth for a 10th month. The Purchasing Managers' Index declined to 56.7 last month from 57.2 in December, above the 50 level that indicates growth, Markit Economics said in a report in London. That's less than the 57.3 forecast by economists. The pound extended declines against the euro and the dollar.
