    The Austin D. Lucas Scholarship Fund was created as a benefit to children of MDNA member firm employees. The scholarship applications for the 2013-2014 academic year have been mailed.     US Manufacturing Weakens, But May Rebound Quickly

    Manufacturing got off to a weak start this year in the United States as motor vehicle output tumbled in January, but a rebound in factory activity in New York State suggested that any setback would be temporary. In a further sign that the sluggish economic recovery remains on track, consumers were a bit more upbeat, even as they paid more for gasoline and a tax increase reduced their paychecks. More

    Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is making a couple of stops in upstate New York to talk about new federal legislation to boost high-tech manufacturing across the state. Gillibrand says her first bill in the new Congress would create a federal funding competition encouraging regional public-private partnerships to spur growth of local manufacturing industries, especially in clean-tech and high-tech manufacturing.     One of the best ideas in President Barack Obama's most recent State of the Union speech was one that few people seemed to notice. He called for "a network of manufacturing hubs," surely a strange phrase for most Americans. Since giving his address, the president has repeated and elaborated on the idea in several speeches around the country.     Westpack, a bottle decorating and packaging company based in Russia, plans to establish manufacturing operations in Covington, Ky. The $4.9 million investment will create 63 new, full-time jobs. More

    Ball Corp. to Close Manufacturing Plant

    Ball Corp. says it will close a food packaging and aerosol can manufacturing plant in Elgin, Ill., in December. Broomfield, Ill. based Ball will report a $21 million after-tax charge as a result of the closure, according to a company press statement. The plant's 245 workers will receive severance pay and can apply for other open positions within the company. More
