American business confidence in the world economy has surged, adding to an uptick in overall optimism as U.S. tax cuts and looser regulation improve the outlook for domestic growth, according to a new study. Some 69 percent of leaders from mid-size companies across the U.S. said they were optimistic about the global economy this year, more than double the 30 percent in 2017.
American manufacturing is experiencing a remarkable period of growth. In September 2017, the Institute for Supply Management recorded a 13-year high, with its national factory index climbing to 60.8. (In October, the index dipped slightly to 58.7, although any reading higher than 50 indicates industry growth.)
U.S. factory output was flat for the second straight month in January, raising questions about the manufacturing outlook as production dropped in the aerospace, plastics and food industries. The lack of growth in U.S. manufacturing, reported by the Federal Reserve, confounded analyst expectations for a 0.3 percent monthly gain.
The Detroit News
The White House's top economist said the U.S. could achieve annual growth rates of 3 percent through the next decade if President Donald Trump's policies on regulations and infrastructure are enacted. The Council of Economic Advisers released its annual economic report, which praises the effects of the tax cuts and tax overhaul signed into law by Trump last December.
It's now safe to say that the U.S. economy is in a boom. Small business leaders are saying it. Measures of business optimism, tracked by the National Federation of Independent Business, are at all-time highs. These heady survey measures haven't yet been matched by hard data, but the hard numbers are looking good too.
Manufacturing is going through a technological resurgence that is transforming the modern factory. Today we are seeing data-driven factories, with an unstoppable integration of connected systems and devices. Gartner predicts that 25 billion Internet-connected things will be in operation by 2020 with close to $2 trillion of economic benefit globally.
