    The Austin D. Lucas Scholarship Fund was created as a benefit to children of MDNA member firm employees. The scholarship applications for the 2014-2015 academic year have been mailed. Completed applications must be received by May 15 at the MDNA headquarters for consideration for the following fall semester.

    Obama adds manufacturing research hubs

    President Barack Obama unveiled two more manufacturing innovation institutes in his National Network for Manufacturing Innovation intended to push forward advanced manufacturing technologies and sustain long-term growth of high-tech jobs in the United States. The president announced the selections of two consortiums, one in Chicago that will develop cutting-edge digital and virtual manufacturing and design tools and the other in Detroit that will cultivate manufacturing techniques for lightweight, high-performance metals and alloys.

    It is not a secret that American manufacturing has faced a number of significant obstacles recently. Every month there seems to be a new story about a factory closing, a labor dispute between executives and employees or staff reductions due to offshore labor shifts. People say the industry is known for low wages, subpar working condition and continual quality control issues, none of which help attract new workers, but are those actually the biggest challenges facing manufacturing right now?     Mindfulness in managing risk

    Mindfulness has its roots in Eastern religion. It is also used therapeutically to treat a variety of psychological conditions, as well as in coaching to encourage excellence in healthy people. Used properly, mindfulness can also make our risk management more effective. Being mindful means bringing your complete attention to your current experience on a moment-to-moment basis, being aware of everything in your surroundings, acknowledging what is there and accepting it as valid.     SBA to award grants to support R&D, small-business innovation
    Black Enterprise
    The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that it will award grants to state and local economic development agencies, business development centers, colleges and universities to support programs for innovative, technology-driven small businesses under SBA's Federal and State Technology partnership program. Applications for the grants are open now through April 11.

    Manufacturing output in US rises most in 6 months

    Factory production rose in February by the most in six months, showing manufacturing will help the U.S. economy emerge from a weather-related setback. The 0.8 percent gain exceeded the highest estimate in a Bloomberg survey and followed a revised 0.9 percent slump in January, figures from the Federal Reserve in Washington showed recently.

    New curriculum prepares students for manufacturing

    Technical colleges across South Carolina have begun using a new curriculum that Clemson University researchers have developed to help teach students the basic skills they need to land a job in a modern manufacturing plant. The curriculum is spreading as instructors from the K-12 system, technical colleges and universities scramble to educate the workers who will be critical in meeting the needs of the state's employers and recruiting the next big industry.
