    Toyota unveils revamped manufacturing process
    The Wall Street Journal
Toyota Motor Corp. broke a two-year silence on a revamped manufacturing process — built on sharing components among vehicles — that the world's best-selling auto maker says will produce half its vehicles by 2020 and slash costs. But its unveiling follows a path blazed in recent years by German rival Volkswagen AG — a reversal for the Japanese pioneer, whose production system was for decades seen as the gold standard, giving the world such manufacturing concepts as "just-in-time inventory" and "continuous improvement."

Euro zone and US manufacturing expand, China struggles
    Reuters
Euro zone businesses ramped up activity in March as the European Central Bank started printing money to spur economic growth, while a slowdown among Chinese factories fueled expectations of more monetary stimulus. U.S. manufacturing growth also edged up despite a stronger U.S. dollar and the threat of an interest rate rise from the Federal Reserve later this year. The Eurozone Composite Flash Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) from data vendor Markit, based on surveys of thousands of companies and seen as a good growth indicator, jumped to a near- four-year high of 54.1 from February's 53.3.

Road course will test self-driving cars
    Manufacturing
Self-driving cars will be on the move in Michigan this summer, but not on public roads: the University of Michigan is setting up its own mock city, the Mobility Transportation Center (MTC), to test the way autonomous cars behave in real-world scenarios. The faux city, essentially a wirelessly connected, life-sized toy car environment, was created by the university in partnership with the United States government and leading technology companies. It will test both the in-vehicle components and exterior infrastructure needed to make self-driving and environment-aware vehicles common and convenient on the road.

How 3-D printing can save on your company's tax bill
    By Tracy Szwec
3-D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is one of the hottest topics in manufacturing today. After all, this technology is solving many problems, and it could actually be quite cost-effective for some organizations. In some cases, it is possible that additive manufacturing could be labeled as research and development. Anyone who follows tax law will quickly realize that obtaining the R&D classification quickly makes for some interesting tax ramifications.
