The benefits and risks of mobile access to manufacturing information
    Manufacturing.net
The much-talked-about bring your own device trend has positive potential for better communication and collaboration throughout the manufacturing process. However, the use of mobile devices for content and process management has raised questions about information security in demanding and heavily regulated manufacturing environments where protecting confidential data is of the utmost importance. As more and more employees are looking to use tablets and smartphones for work activities, manufacturers must evaluate BYOD strategies that have the potential to significantly enhance productivity and compliance activities, while still ensuring that sensitive information is adequately protected.

Manufacturing in New York City isn't dead after all
    New York Daily News
ceStone, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based manufacturer of kitchen counters from recycled materials just added three workers and is about to tap seven more. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, bustling with distilleries, woodworkers and tech-driven manufacturers, has gone from 3,600 jobs in 2001 to nearly 7,000 jobs today. Industry City, an industrial building in Sunset Park that's courting a new wave of manufacturing tenants, currently houses 2,400 jobs and looks to have 15,000 over the next 10 years. Manufacturing in New York City isn't dead after all. The long dwindling sector, which hemorrhaged at least 5,000 jobs a year from 1997 to 2010, has held steady for three years straight, according to a new study released by the Center for an Urban Future.

The view from Europe: End of the road?
    By Andrew Gaved
Is it the end of the road for the automotive refrigerant rebels? Well, after the better part of 18 months of claim and counter-claim between those who believe the HFO refrigerant R1234yf is inherently unsafe and those who don't, we have as close to a definitive decision on the subject as we are probably going to get. The Joint Research Centre, the European Commission's officially-sanctioned scientific body, has found "no evidence of a serious risk in the use of this refrigerant in MAC [Mobile Air Conditioning] systems under normal and foreseeable conditions of use."

Why leaders need to shut up and listen
    By C. Fredrick Crum
Typically, we choose our leaders for their skill at conveying messages clearly and powerfully. But it's their ability to listen that distinguishes great leaders from the rest. We often attribute courage and strength to the speaker, but what about the listener? The art of listening is a leadership strength that is often greatly underdeveloped. Some leaders "hear," others use communication techniques to make others believe they are listening, while few leaders actually have listening skills and abilities.
