Manufacturing Expands For Fourth Consecutive Month
In March, economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded for the fourth consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 46th consecutive month, according to the Institute for Supply Management. However, "the reality is that there are many headwinds this year that are starting to constrain the pace of growth," according to the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation.
Green On The Hill: DOE Industrial Energy-Efficiency Programs Scrutinized
The Obama administration announced it would be spending about $1.5 million over the next two years to create new technical assistance partnerships to help manufacturers implement combined heat and power programs in their facilities. The announcement is a follow up to President Obama's executive order on CHP last summer establishing a national goal of deploying 40 gigawatts of new, cost-effective CHP in the U.S. by the end of 2020.
But the U.S. Department of Energy warned that the $1.5 million in new funding — a relative drop in the bucket — is nonetheless subject to congressional appropriations.
5 Ways Manufacturers Can Take Advantage Of The Industrial Internet
Big data is not just for predicting election outcomes and mapping genomes. General Electric is betting on the so-called Industrial Internet — a term they coined — to help manufacturers boost performance, streamline processes and better compete in the global marketplace. Essentially, the Industrial Internet is a network that connects scores of sophisticated machines embedded with sensors and computer software to other machines so manufacturers can gain real-time insight into everything from production bottlenecks to pending maintenance issues. The result is a transparent system that enables businesses to make more informed business decisions, curb production hiccups and cut costs.
Manufacturers Being Too Complacent Over Energy Use
Paul Akrill, operations director of leading independent energy management IMServ Europe, is critical of the way many U.K. companies are handling their energy management, stating, “Installing smart metering has been at the heart of many U.K. organizations’ energy management policies and this has resulted in huge volumes of data but unfortunately, businesses are doing nothing with this intelligence. My team collects energy data from over 200,000 individual meter points, with each of these points producing one or more readings every half hour — that’s 7 billion meter readings in our systems a year. Put into context, 80 billion units of electricity worth £10 billion ($15.2 billion) is billed using the data we collect."
