The Federal Reserve's latest survey of business conditions found manufacturing activity accelerating in many parts of the country in late April and early May, even as some businesses expressed concern about uncertainty cause by rising trade tensions.

Americans boosted their spending by 0.6 percent in April, the biggest increase in five months, while a gauge of inflation remained at the Federal Reserve's optimal level for a second straight month. The Commerce Department said that last month's increase in consumer spending was the largest since a 0.7 percent rise last November.
China reported last week that factory activity grew more than expected in May, with the official manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) coming in at 51.9 — the highest level since October 2017. The Chinese manufacturing PMI was forecast to dip to 51.3 in May from 51.4 in April, according to a poll of economists by Reuters.
There's a suspicious absence of what many economists have expected from the AI boom happening in the U.S.: a lift in productivity, and maybe a catastrophic loss of jobs. Despite all the hype about AI redefining businesses and industries, a new report analyzing AI's impact on the U.S. economy, published May 29, says it's still too early to tell what kind of impact the technology might have.
