Los Angeles Times
Los Angeles has hemorrhaged manufacturing jobs since 2007, casting a pall over the state's economic recovery, according to a forecast released by Chapman University.
Los Angeles has lost 20 percent of its manufacturing jobs since 2007 and California as a whole shed 1 percent of those positions, the report said.
Since beginning of the recovery in 2010, the country as a whole and the state have added manufacturing positions, but Los Angeles has continued to see those jobs disappear.

The business dynamics of plastics manufacturing automation technologies are rapidly advancing. Trends in labor and energy are having a fundamental impact on plastics processors businesses. To effectively compete internationally and defend/expand established markets, high-wage processors must automate production to increase the productivity and economic efficiency of their operations and keep wages in a competitive range.
The Christian Science Monitor
Without question, manufacturing has taken a significant hit during recent decades, and further trade deals raise questions about whether new shocks could hit manufacturing. But there is also a different way to look at the data.
In reality, United States manufacturing output is at an all-time high, worth $2.7 trillion in 2015, up from $1.7 trillion in 2009. And while total employment has fallen by nearly a third since 1970, the jobs that remain are increasingly skilled.
The Wall Street Journal
While 3-D printing, crowdfunding and other tools have accelerated hardware product-development cycles in the past few years, little progress has been made in speeding up the manufacturing of the electronics inside connected devices.
Tempo Automation Inc., with its printed circuit board assembly plant in San Francisco, is going after that problem. Customers can upload their printed circuit board designs online, then Tempo sources components, assembles and delivers the board in three days. Its low-volume production runs average 25 circuit boards at a time, but can be as few as just one board.
