New skills needed for new manufacturing technology
Brookings

The Washington Post
The group cheer at Wal-Mart's third annual American manufacturing summit — convened to find more American-made products — was greeted with a voice from another era. Ultimately, Walton failed. American factories that might have fueled the effort instead closed. Critics blamed Wal-Mart's insistence on low costs for driving the supply chain to China, where large factories and cheap labor overwhelmed American rivals.

Industrial production rises but manufacturing flat
USA Today
Industrial production ticked up 0.3 percent in June as the mining and utilities sectors saw a boost from an increase in crude oil extraction. The index of manufacturing, mining and utilities increased slightly in June after falling 0.2 percent in May, the Federal Reserve said. That beat estimates of 0.2 percent growth compiled by a Bloomberg survey of economists.
