American manufacturing may be falling behind globally, but it's not simply because companies are shifting jobs overseas to save money. To put it bluntly, the U.S. isn't keeping up with other countries in training workers with skills needed in today's manufacturing marketplace. While manufacturing jobs are slowly returning to American soil — 60,000 in 2014 — workers might not have the skills to meet the technical demands of modern manufacturers.
The term Industry 4.0 refers to the combination of several major technology innovations, all maturing simultaneously, and expected to have a dramatic impact on manufacturing sectors. These technologies—including advanced robotics and artificial intelligence, sophisticated sensors, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things—when joined together integrate the physical and virtual worlds. This technological infrastructure is still in its early stages of development. But how is it already changing manufacturing?
British car manufacturing hit a 16-year high in the first half of 2016, but the industry says future growth, jobs and investment are at risk following the Brexit vote.
Almost 900,000 cars rolled off production lines at U.K. factories in the first six months of the year, 13 percent more than the same period in 2015.
It was the best half-year performance since 2000, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, as billions of pounds of earlier investment in new models came to fruition.

Production cell applications that increase manufacturing efficiency are central to modern plastics manufacturing automation. To respond effectively to the challenges of global competition, plastics processors are increasingly realizing that lean manufacturing is a necessary component, and manufacturing cells are an important strategic tool. Lean manufacturing is strongly influenced by the manufacturing principles originally developed at Toyota.
