3-D printing, robotics and the future of manufacturing
    eCommerce Times
Imagine a manufacturing floor making sophisticated products through the use of 3-D printers being overseen and fed by robots. That's a frightening scenario for the worker employed in manufacturing. In the face of this unfolding, never-before-witnessed scenario, the manufacturer must constantly be on the leading edge of technology and the worker must constantly update his or her skills. The potential of 3-D printing and robotics is nothing if not inspiring but it's difficult even to imagine the extent of the inroads they will make in our manufacturing base or the myriad of products they'll eventually produce.

Virginia Manufacturing Technology Summer Camp — the high schoolers get to visit nearby manufacturers and talk to and work with industry professionals. But for many of the participants, the highlight is working on a design project using top industry equipment.

Manufacturing picks up, construction spending falls
The Associated Press via USA Today
U.S. factory activity expanded in July at the fastest pace in two years while spending on U.S. construction projects fell in June by the largest amount in five months as government building activity declined to the lowest level since 2006. The manufacturing spike was fueled by surges in new orders, production and hiring. The gains show manufacturing is rebounding and should provide a spark to growth in the coming months.

Indiana gains manufacturing jobs for 2nd straight year
    NWITimes.com
Indiana added manufacturing jobs for the second straight year but the region missed out on the gains. Manufacturer's News Inc., an industry research firm, found the state gained 8,020 manufacturing jobs from April 2012 to April 2013, an increase of 1.4 percent. Northwest Indiana, however, saw a 0.5 percent decline in industrial employment over the same period, largely because of 1.7 percent drop in the production of steel and other primary metals.
