    Reuters
Wal-Mart Stores Inc, which has pledged to buy an additional $250 billion in U.S.-made goods over the next decade, is hitting a snag as it tries to meet that promise: Some vendors keen to participate in the initiative complain that after decades of offshoring it has become impossible to domestically source even commonplace components for their products.

10 states where manufacturing still matters
    24/7 Wall St.
To identify the 10 states where manufacturing matters, 24/7 Wall St. used state gross domestic product figures published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis for 2013. We determined which states had the largest percentage of total output attributable to manufacturing. Why tech is the future of manufacturing, not the end of it
    BizTech
Plenty of worst-case scenarios have predicted that robots will take over manufacturing completely. And there are fears that 3-D printing, which allows people to create their own products and goods, will take an even larger toll on the future health of manufacturing. But these doomsday scenarios are a bit premature. While it's true that manufacturing is being forced to adapt as technology makes some roles and functions redundant, that's essentially the way it's always been. After all, the rise of the automobile rendered horse-and-carriage drivers irrelevant.

Robust manufacturing output buoys US economic outlook
    Reuters
U.S. manufacturing output rose broadly in July and automobile production recorded its largest increase in five years, boosting the economy at the start of the third quarter. While other data showed some cooling in factory activity in New York in August, economists said it did not change the view of an economy with strong momentum, noting that the pullback followed a robust increase in July.

Survey: 1/3 of manufacturing job applicants in Pennsylvania disqualified due to drug testing
    Scranton Times-Tribune
One-third of all applicants for good-paying jobs in Pennsylvania's manufacturing sector are ineligible due to drug use or avoiding a drug test, according to a new study commissioned by the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association. The survey of 200 manufacturing business executives focused on their companies' experience with drug testing and its impact on their workforce. The results indicate drug use by both potential and current workers. Meanwhile, a blind survey of 15 members of the Manufacturers and Employers Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania, or MAEA, shows about half of those surveyed dispute that figure.
