    INDUSTRY NEWS

    US manufacturers gain ground
    The Wall Street Journal
After more than a decade of losing ground to China and other export powerhouses, U.S. manufacturers are finally showing signs of regaining their competitive edge. The U.S. deficit on trade of manufactured goods in this year's first half shrank to $225 billion from $227 billion a year earlier, according to data compiled by Ernest Preeg, an economist and trade expert at the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, an industry-funded research group in Arlington, Va. The improvement, while slight, came after years of ballooning deficits as the U.S. lost manufacturing business to China, South Korea and other nations.

Report: US manufacturing to add millions of jobs by 2020
Minnesota Public Radio via United Press International
The U.S. manufacturing sector is showing signs that it could add as many as 5 million jobs by 2020, a report shows. The Boston Consulting Group is set to release a report that says "outsourcing" production to China, will switch to "reshoring" production back to the United States. The report says manufacturing could add 2.5 million to 5 million jobs by 2020. The higher number could shave 2 or 3 percentage points off the unemployment rate, which now stands at 7.4 percent.

Automation could be key to slow manufacturing hiring
    Grand Forks Herald
Minnesota's factories are churning out lots of products like airplane parts and medical devices these days but they're not exactly going on hiring sprees. Meanwhile, every other industry in the state's economy is adding jobs. A clue to the lackluster hiring in manufacturing might be found at a Kurt Manufacturing factory in Fridley, where machines are increasingly taking over the tasks workers used to perform.

Study: Public relations campaign needed for manufacturing jobs
    Tampa Bay Business Journal
A Florida regional task force’s research into manufacturing work force needs found that a lack of interest in manufacturing is producing a shortage of skilled workers. The Hillsborough-Pinellas Manufacturing Workforce Analysis also determined that workers know little about the industry's fundamentals and a disconnect exists between the industry and education. The study looked at specific jobs and skills within the hiring needs of manufacturers who complain that a lack of qualified workers for critical positions hinders business growth.

Manufacturing output slips 0.1 percent in July
The Associated Press via USA Today
Output at U.S. factories declined slightly in July, reflecting a drop in auto production. The decline was expected to be temporary given the banner sales year automakers are having. Manufacturing output edged down 0.1 percent in July compared with June, the Federal Reserve reported. It was the first drop since declines in March and April.
