    LOCATOR

It was great to see everybody in Chicago last week for the chapter and Board meetings as well as IMTS 2014! What an exciting time to be in our industry and what a great time to showcase the value of a quality used machine from a reputable MDNA dealer. Many of you were able to quote machines directly from the hotel or convention center floor by accessing your Locator Customer & Inventory Management System™ on your cell phone. What a huge advantage to be at the show and still be able to quote a machine to a prospect back home or across the country. This is also a huge advantage when you're at auctions or even in your own warehouse. You get a phone call about a specific machine, access your inventory on your phone and find the perfect fit. Then you quote that machine directly from your phone and set a reminder to follow up with your customer when you return to the office. You conduct business from all over the map, shouldn't you be using a system that does too?

If you don't know how to access your system from your phone or have not migrated to the Locator System yet, contact us today. If you're worried about converting data from your current system don't be. Simply export your customer and inventory data to us and let Locator import it into your CIMS system prior to deploying the application. Don't let historical notes about your customer and inventory hold you back. In most cases your IT personnel should be able to extract all of your data so that we can import your notes and quotes along with the customer contact and inventory information. If for some reason they can't we can probably still populate the customer and inventory information and run parallel for a year while the "history" rewrites itself with updated customer notes and more recent quotes. After six months or so the history from your old system has become just that, history, and the need to run parallel will no longer be necessary.

If you are still using an in-house application or older technology system and would like to migrate to a newer state of the art system simply call Jim Bowman at 703-683-5957 or email JBowman@locatoronline.com. He would also be happy to schedule an online demonstration of the software for you at your earliest convenience. MDNA members may qualify for a 10 percent discount!

Manufacturing in the U.S. will never be what it was. Employment in the sector is down nearly 50 percent from its May 1979 peak, and fell more than 10 percent during the Great Recession.

Recovering lost profits by improving reverse logistics
    By Alan Kelsky
Until recently, the most attention that the supply chain got was for product management centered on the new introduction of products or on the outbound shipping part, where volume shipping is part of the product life cycle.

    Top 10 from IMTS 2014
    Manufacturing
This year's International Manufacturing Technology Show has shown optimistic numbers, and the Manufacturing.net staff was part of the thundering traffic cruising through McCormick Place in Chicago. There was more to see than any normal human could take in within the six-day show — 1,900 exhibitors displayed their wares for over 100,000 attendees. That's why we've collected some of the best of IMTS 2014 — admittedly though, we may have missed some nuggets of interest amongst the crowds.

Smart factories know how to use big data
    By Alan Kelsky
Go to a meeting of any trade group or association and someone is going to mention "big data." I know of scores of companies that have scores of servers dedicated to storing all this data. So what? If they are not using the data to improve their business, storing it is a waste of server space and money. However, you need to know which data you need and how to use it to improve your company. A huge area that is great territory for using big data is for measuring untold numbers of little things in factories.

Industrial output falls for 1st time since January
    Bloomberg Businessweek
Industrial production in the U.S. unexpectedly declined in August for the first time in seven months as auto manufacturing cooled. Output at factories, mines and utilities fell 0.1 percent after a 0.2 percent gain the prior month that was smaller than previously reported, figures from the Federal Reserve showed. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of 79 economists called for a 0.3 percent rise. Automakers scaled back following the biggest surge in almost five years.

This technology could have the biggest impact on American jobs since offshoring
    Business Insider
Manufacturing in the U.S. will never be what it was. Employment in the sector is down nearly 50 percent from its May 1979 peak, and fell more than 10 percent during the Great Recession. But 3-D printing, which last fall Credit Suisse forecast could grow up to 30 percent, has the potential to reshape how America makes stuff, creating new high tech jobs in the U.S. and bringing old ones back from abroad. The labor input savings 3-D printing can yield for employers are substantial — and at the same time, the technology appears poised to create markets for new, higher-skilled jobs.

US manufacturing revival still hard to find in the data as imports continue to rise
    Supply Chain News
While anecdotal evidence of a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing continues to come in, unfortunately it is not easy to find support for that trend yet in the numbers. However, the fact that U.S. manufacturing output finally surpassed peak 2007 levels in July is certainly a good sign. One way to look at U.S. manufacturing progress is through changes in import levels of manufactured and other goods, and here, signs of a manufacturing revival in the U.S. are hard to find.

New York manufacturing sector expands at fastest pace in nearly 5 years
    Fox Business
New York manufacturers say business activity jumped in September to its highest since late-2009, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Empire State Manufacturing Survey. The Empire State's business conditions index rose to 27.5 in September from 14.7 in August. A reading above zero indicates expansion, while negative readings reflect contraction.
