Obama plans executive actions to strengthen US manufacturing
    Reuters
President Barack Obama will launch a series of executive actions to strengthen U.S. advanced manufacturing, including a $300 million investment in three technologies considered crucial to the country's industrial competitiveness. The White House said in a statement the actions would build on the final report of Obama's Advanced Manufacturing Partnership that recommends measures to spur innovation, secure a skilled workforce and improve the business climate.

Keeping the US manufacturing industry on a positive track
    By Alan Kelsky
As we approach the midterm elections, politicians from both parties are calling each other job killers and suggesting that outsourcing of jobs in manufacturing has permanently damaged the manufacturing sector. If they listened long enough to the news and experts in manufacturing, they might understand that manufacturing is alive and well in the United States and can stay that way. A recent report issued by the Boston Consulting Group lists the United States as a "rising star" in the global manufacturing sector.

China's rising wages and the 'Made in USA' revival
    Bloomberg Businessweek
American manufacturing's increased competitiveness against China is a story that's been told for a few years now, giving rise to the term "reshoring." But it's not just China that the U.S. is gaining against. For companies making goods for sale in the U.S., Mexico has long been the place to go — and that's slipping, too. The BCG survey shows that the U.S. has passed Mexico as the place where companies are most likely to build a new plant to make things to sell in the U.S.

Can paid internships help bridge the gap in manufacturing?
    Manufacturing Business Technology
In a Wall Street Journal piece titled, "Why US Manufacturing is Poised for a Comeback (Maybe)," the author discusses some of the progress being made within the manufacturing industry, but doesn't sugarcoat a challenge that continues to face employers: "U.S. manufacturers complain they can't find enough people skilled in operating or repairing sophisticated machinery, and U.S. students do poorly in international comparisons of math and science skills." In the meantime, youth unemployment or underemployment continues to rise at double, triple and, sometimes, greater than quadruple the rate of general unemployment in the region.

Navigating the challenge of choosing ERP software
    Manufacturing
Finding and utilizing the right enterprise resource planning system is a great way to streamline a company’s manufacturing process, minimize miscommunication and disconnect amongst your employees and decrease the resulting errors. An ERP system puts all the data — from supplier to production to consumer, from executives to managers to supervisors to line workers — on the same database, providing a thread that connects the entire process.

Top 5 US cities for advanced manufacturing
    Change the Equation
For at least 20 years, many Americans all but wrote off manufacturing as of factory jobs simply evaporated or went overseas. It's time to think again. Advanced manufacturing has come roaring back to life in many places, often in the nation's hardest-hit industrial towns. Many advanced manufacturing jobs don't require a four-year college degree, so you can start working and earning just a year or two after high school. But make no mistake: this is not low-skilled work. Most of the fastest-growing jobs in the sector — like computer-controlled machine operation or repair of high-tech industrial equipment — require strong math, science, and technology skills.

Euro-area manufacturing grows as risk of recession eases
    Bloomberg
The euro-area economy may have moved one step away from another recession. A Purchasing Managers' Index showed manufacturing in the region unexpectedly grew in October, while Spain's economy showed signs of a further recovery, with third-quarter unemployment dropping to the lowest level since 2011. In Germany, factories rebounded from a slump in September.
