Falling wages at factories squeeze the middle class
    The New York Times
Even as the White House and leaders on Capitol Hill and in Fortune 500 boardrooms all agree that expanding the country's manufacturing base is a key to prosperity, evidence is growing that the pay of many blue-collar jobs is shrinking to the point where they can no longer support a middle-class life. A new study by the National Employment Law Project reveals that many factory jobs nowadays pay far less than what workers in almost identical positions earned in the past.

US manufacturers in a 'sweet spot' heading into holiday season
    By Chelsea Adams
U.S. manufacturing surged in October, marking the second month in 2014 it reached 59 on the Institute for Supply Management's PMI Composite index. Plus, production hit a 10-year high, and new orders rose 10 points. October marked the 17th consecutive month the manufacturing sector expanded and the 65th straight month the overall economy grew. With the holiday season approaching, analysts say these figures, combined with lagging production in overseas markets, put the U.S. manufacturing sector in a "sweet spot."

GE makes a big bet on manufacturing
    TIME
GE's executives are betting on a few megatrends, including the belief that emerging-market economies are entering a period very much like the post–World War II period in the U.S. Those countries will need new houses, bridges, roads, airports and all types of consumer goods in unprecedented quantities. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that by 2025, emerging-economy nations will spend more than $20 trillion a year in this way. That means that future economic growth may well be centered on making things, rather than trading on their value.

More high schools teach manufacturing skills
    USA Today
Manufacturing courses were dropped from vocational education programs as the industry declined over the past three decades and no one tracks how many high schools offer them now. But Project Lead the Way, which creates high school engineering and technology curricula, says one manufacturing class it designed for Wheeling High School in Illinois is offered in about 800 schools — nearly twice as many as in 2009.
