    Government Relations Update
    Washington Remains Broken
Late Wednesday on Dec. 3, the House of Representatives finally took action to extend the increased expensing allowed under IRS Section 179, that expired at the end of 2013. However, the much talked about "permanent" status that was thought to be achievable proved too lofty a goal. Instead, with only three weeks left in the 2014 calendar year, the best case scenario our government will accomplish is to pass a one year extension of the increased expensing provision along with nearly four dozen other business related "tax extenders" for the current year. This means they will expire again in just three weeks. The best case scenario will be if the Senate passes and the President signs this bill into law. Washington remains broken.

America's manufacturing trade deficit just set another record
    Bloomberg Businessweek
The U.S. trade deficit in manufactured products hit $71.2 billion in October, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. That is the highest ever, says Alan Tonelson, a blogger who compiles government data. The year-to-date deficit is running 12 percent ahead of what it was in 2013, putting it on track to set an annual record as well, Tonelson says.

New EPA ozone regulations could be troublesome for manufacturers
    Manufacturing
The Obama administration unveiled a new environmental regulation designed to decrease ozone emissions, a smog-causing pollutant that is often linked to asthma, respiratory illness, and heart disease. The regulations proposed by the Obama administration would lower the amount of ozone pollution from 75 parts per billion established in 2008 by the Bush administration to a smaller range of 65 to 70 parts per billion. However, this value is still less strict than some environmental groups were advocating for. In fact, many environmental groups are in favor of stricter guidelines that would lower the threshold down to 60 parts per billion.

American manufacturing is alive and well
    The Wall Street Journal
For the U.S. economy, manufacturing still matters. That is something that can be lost amid the influx of imports on store shelves and steady erosion of factory jobs. With only 10 percent of private-sector workers employed by manufacturers, versus 25 percent in 1980, it seems like the sector wouldn’t provide much oomph. Yet that ignores other workers, from truck drivers to forklift operators, who aren't employed in manufacturing but still depend on it.

    Will manufacturing embrace cloud-based ERP?
    TechTarget
Although adoption of cloud-based ERP applications may be picking up, one industry — manufacturing — is slow to take up the banner. When it comes time to replace legacy systems, manufacturing companies turn their backs on cloud-based ERP applications for many reasons: not only for the usual cloud-related concerns around security and availability, but also for considerations specific to each manufacturer. Their highly tailored workflows, business rules and data structures —particularly those with multiple sites — require a level of customization not yet found in multi-tenant applications.
