Harvard Business Review
In early 2016 economists David Autor, David Dorn, and Gordon Hanson published an influential paper that highlighted some of the costs of global trade. They reviewed the literature and reported that trade with China had cost the U.S. as many as one million manufacturing jobs since 1999, had lowered wages, and had not led to the new jobs and industries that trade proponents had promised.
The main case for trade, though, was always that it would improve overall welfare by allowing a greater variety of products to be produced more efficiently.
We sure do ask a lot of the manufacturing industry in this country. We want manufacturing to not just make a comeback in terms of output, but also to create a lot of jobs too. This is very much on display in an interesting NYT piece on how private equity took over the snack food manufacturer Hostess. While the article purports to show the murkiness of private equity's actual value, what it really shows is how murky people's views of manufacturing are. In my reading, private equity is the clear hero of the story.
U.S. bilateral trade with China and Mexico, particularly the growing deficits the U.S. carries with the two nations, generally drives the conversation about U.S. manufacturing trade. With the latest report on U.S. international trade in goods and services, from the Commerce Department's U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Canada just might be moving into the spotlight.
Digital commerce is now a necessity for the competitive growth and success of manufacturers of all sizes. Channel shift, new customer expansion, and increased digital expectations have resulted in an evolved B2B buyer. As the landscape has shifted, so have the solutions that power commerce experiences. Manufacturers are moving toward faster, more cost effective and flexible solutions for their commerce platforms.
NPR's Scott Simon talks to economist Michael Hicks about how most of the manufacturing jobs lost in this country are due to increased use of technology and not outsourcing to foreign countries.
