Digital health push woos technology firms, pains doctors MarketWatch Share    
Doctors across the nation will spend on average roughly $40,000 on software to build digital databases of patient records. Even after all that expense, few physicians will be able to send patient records to other doctors, according to government advisers. Meantime, dozens of health care technology companies are making their pitch to provide patient-history systems where none currently exist. Billions of dollars in software revenues are at stake, which is backed by $30 billion in federal money. But before any of this will benefit patients, the program must get past some big hurdles springing up in what some compare to a Wild West frontier market. More

A recent ICD-10 study by J.A. Thomas and Associates found investing in education and training would be most beneficial to 72 percent of respondents, with more than half pointing out that they need help facilitating medical staff acceptance and endorsement of ICD-10 conversion. According to Mel Tully, senior vice president of clinical services and education, "Training efforts, to date, have fallen squarely on coders. An average clinician spends 122 hours per year (three business weeks) trying to access information from various EMRs, according to a report from the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Imprivata. "This is caused by the overabundance of passwords and logins being managed to access the applications needed for patient care," the report stated. Federal health officials call it the Wall of Shame.
