Quick Resources for Busy School Administrators:
Engagement with Gifted Education

Building principals and the school superintendents are key stakeholders in the development of talents and the provision of services for gifted students. We know that administrators can make programs with their understanding and support or break them by their reluctance and failure to allocate resources. With the full spectrum of students on their minds and with their professional plates overfull, few principals and superintendents attend the annual NAGC Convention, access our print or electronic resources, or actively participate in the leadership of our organization.

It has been decades since a sitting principal or superintendent served on the NAGC Board of Directors although they did so in the early years of the Association. In fact, the last superintendent to serve as President of NAGC was elected over 50 years ago. Clearly, as an organization, we did not meet the needs of principals and superintendents, and they voted with their feet.

From where I sit, the failure to engage school leaders and to provide them with the resources they want (not what we think they want) is a serious problem for the field of gifted education.

Now is the time to submit your carefully crafted proposals to present at the NAGC 60th Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 7-10.

We encourage you to submit your best ideas, research, and practical classroom strategies for consideration by Feb. 1. The Networks and Convention Program Committee, essential in the proposal review and selection process, will look for topics with broad appeal and carefully schedule a variety of topics in each time frame. To celebrate our 60th Anniversary, NAGC invites proposals with an historical perspective or flair. This special session could focus on changes in the field, the influence of leaders, and impact of research on a specific "strand" of gifted and its possible futures.

NAGC encourages gifted education advocates to share their stories of the value of programs and services for gifted education with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) as part of its "Federal Outlook for Exceptional Children" report. The stories are shared with Congress and the Administration to help policymakers better understands the value of these kinds of programs and the need to do more.

Stories may be submitted by anyone in contact with gifted children (with parent's permission) — including, teachers, school administrators, and parents.

NAGC is pleased to join with CEC in our federal advocacy efforts. Your examples put a personal touch on the facts and figures that accompany our funding and legislative proposals.

The winter 2013 WOW series offers teachers and district coordinators the opportunity to listen in on a variety of approaches and explore strategies and practices for implementing the Common Core State Standards in the classroom while modifying them for gifted and advanced learners. "Common Core Conversations," a series of six Webinars on Wednesday, kick off on Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. Eastern. Each session is just $39 for NAGC Members ($59 for Nonmembers). Register now here.

Montgomery County, Md., Will Offer 'Compacted' Classes for Advanced Math Students

Montgomery County, Md., students moving faster than their peers in math will have the chance to take "compacted" classes starting in fourth grade under new education standards designed to make instruction more challenging and uniform nationwide. The compacted courses will teach material in a shorter amount of time and will be available at all schools. But the district will have very strict guidelines as to which students will be eligible for the classes. More
