Announcing the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign

Two years ago, I became involved with the Development Committee because I felt it was vital for NAGC to have a strong base of financial support from within our own ranks, as well as to use fundraising as a way to get our message out to a wider audience. It is already starting to pay off — the Committee made great strides under the leadership of Wendy Behrens, and we are now ready to begin realizing many of the initiatives that were started last year. As the new Development Committee chair, I would like to formally announce the launch of the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign, and invite you to participate in this important fundraising effort.

NAGC News
Revised GT Teacher Preparation Standards Now Available

NAGC
NAGC and CEC have jointly released revised standards for teacher preparation in gifted and talented education. The standards update the 2006 teacher training standards and are used to guide programs offering masters and certificate programs in gifted education. They also provide guidance for K-12 professional development in gifted education. The standards revision was led by the NAGC professional Standards Committee in collaboration with CEC-TAG and the network of university professionals that train teachers in gifted education.

The standards are used by the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) (formerly known as NCATE) as part of the national school/college of education accreditation process and were approved by CAEP in December. The standards, the research base, and an explanation of the differences between the 2013 and 2006 standards are available on the NAGC website.

Webinars for Members: Diversity Series and Free Leadership Sessions
This week we launched a six-webinar series, “Conversations About Diversity & Equity,” that continues through the spring. Diversity is a progressive and strategic priority both inside and outside the organization and appears in each category of NAGC's Leadership Initiatives for the year. We also know from surveying past webinar attendees that topics such as building multicultural classrooms and identifying and serving low-income and culturally diverse students are important for their professional growth. The Webinars on Wednesday (WOW) sessions are just $29/each for NAGC members and $130 for the series. Site licenses are also available to extend this valuable content to your school or district colleagues.

Looking for Network Leaders
Participating in a Network is wonderful way to meet people with similar interests, learn new techniques for teaching, counseling, and nurturing gifted children, and make a difference by sharing your experience and expertise. Nine NAGC Networks will elect Chairs-Elect in June and one has a vacancy for a Chair. Nominations are due (emailed or postmarked) by April 7, 2014. Elections open in mid-June and successful candidates will start in their position on September 1.

The two-year term as Chair-Elect gives you an opportunity to learn more about leading the Network and getting to know other Network members while building a strong leadership team. NAGC appreciates the time and dedication of Network volunteers and, along with the Network Board Liaison, supports each Network's scope of work.

Learn more about the open Network positions and what it takes to become a candidate. Many people who serve on NAGC's Board of Directors or Committees started their work with NAGC as a Network leader.

Explore NAGC's Career Center for New Job Possibilities
At the NAGC Career Center, you'll find these available positions:
  • Ricks Center for Gifted Children is looking for a Director. Ricks Center at the University of Denver provides nationally recognized gifted education to approximately 250 gifted students ages 3 to grade eight. Closes February 27.
  • Quest Academy, a private school for academically gifted students, seeks an experienced full-time Spanish language instructor. Spanish is a new language at Quest Academy, so the curriculum will be at the beginning/introductory level to start. Closes February 28.
  • The Roeper School, a PK-12 independent private for gifted students, is looking for a Lower School Director. The school has campuses in Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham, MI. Materials must be received by March 3 and position begins July 1.

Scene by Scene: Connecting Filmmaking to Classroom Subjects

The snow is falling here in the Northeast and frigid temps have caused me to resort to a bit of "movie time." A Netflix selection, gummy bears, and some M&M Peanuts, and my mind is free to relax. Similarly, the students seated before us share in this same experience, usually with a bit more junk food. Sitting there, I began to think about the interdisciplinary connections to the entire process of filmmaking and how I might share the ideas with my students.

The following topics could be enrichment activities for students who show interest and have some spare time during a particular class period. They can be used during weekly enrichment time, or as part of before- and after-school programs. They may even be inserted into the regular curriculum. Again, these are just a short sampling of what is possible. In some cases you or the student may need to access and make available web or print resources. I hope that they inspire you to make connections of your own.

The Spark!Lab Invent It Challenge is a free competition open to students globally, with age-group categories from five to 18 and both individual and group submissions accepted. Students across the globe will address the same challenge: create an invention that solves a real-world problem.
