Super Results for NAGC and the Field

The weekend of March 20-22 was a very important and exciting one for NAGC and for the field of gifted education. As it always does, the NAGC Board of Directors met for its third meeting of the fiscal year. NAGC also held the annual state affiliate conference, which involves hosting leaders of state advocacy gifted organizations for a series of shared learning sessions and making visits to senators and representatives on Capitol Hill to advocate for federal legislation that supports gifted education and gifted learners. The third annual event, during what NAGC staff affectionately calls "Super Weekend," was the meeting of the Program Committee to finalize the presentations for the upcoming Convention in November in Phoenix.

News from Capitol Hill
Senate Committee Bill Includes Gifted Students

The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee approved a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the Elementary & Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The legislation contains provisions gifted education advocates have long been calling for.

The Every Child Achieves Act was unanimously approved after a series of amendments were considered. Notably for gifted education supporters, Senator Barbara Mikulski's (MD) amendment to restore the Javits Gifted Education Act to ESEA was approved by the Committee on a voice vote. As you know, the Javits program supports the National Center for Research on Gifted Education as well as demonstration research grants. In 2015, the Act will also support grants to states to support gifted education activities.

Looking Forward to Meeting you in the NAGC Community

Your NAGC membership allows you to connect to others in the gifted and talented community who share your interests in specific topics and subject areas through the NAGC Networks. To foster those connections and nurture the power of Networks, NAGC will soon launch the online NAGC Community. All NAGC members are welcome and encouraged to fully engage in these online discussion groups. You'll find Network Neighborhoods (Groups) and resource libraries where you can make contacts, ask questions and share some of your wisdom with others.

Within the month, you will receive an invitation from the Networks to which you belong with information about how to access the Community and select how you want to participate and what information you want to share with others.

A New NAGC Network for Members!

At its March meeting, the NAGC Board of Directors approved a new Network. After nearly 20 years within NAGC making presentations on, and advocating for, gifted sexual-minority learners, the GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) Network was formed as a Special Interest Group in 2011. Since that time, the SIG has grown significantly in membership, collaborated on projects and newsletter articles with existing networks, and developed content on the needs of gifted GLBTQ youth for Parenting for High Potential, Teaching for High Potential and the NAGC website. Learn more about this new Network and the resources they have developed on their NAGC website page. For further information about the Network's many activities, you may contact any of its officers: Coordinator Terry Friedrichs, Advocacy Liaison Teresa Manzella, Communications Officer P.J. Sedillo, or Social Secretary Sue Fischer.

New Position Statement on Excellence Gaps
NAGC
In March, the NAGC Board of Directors approved a new position statement that members may want to use in their education and advocacy efforts:

Addressing Excellence Gaps in K‐12 Education
Reducing and eventually eliminating excellence gaps is an issue of equity and social justice, community development, economic advancement and national security. NAGC calls on policymakers and educators to set a goal of closing achievement gaps at every level of achievement.

NAGC is seeking applicants for the next Association Editor. The editor chairs the Publications Committee and coordinates work with the NAGC Board of Directors and the NAGC National office. Javits-Frasier Scholarship Deadline is May 15
NAGC
NAGC is looking for teachers, school counselors, or school psychologists who:
  • work in a Title I school,
  • are new to the field of gifted and talented education, or are in a new Gifted/Talented Position, and
  • have demonstrated a desire and commitment to increase culturally and linguistically diverse students' access to talent development opportunities.
Scholarship winners receive professional development opportunities that include:
  • $500 travel stipend to attend along with complimentary registration and lodging for the 2015 NAGC Annual Convention in Phoenix, AZ, November 12-15.
  • Two-year NAGC individual membership.
  • Participation in discussions with other scholars, members of the NAGC Diversity and Equity Committee, and NAGC leadership.
  • Teaching resource toolkit and personal mentor.

Online registration is now open for NAGC's 62nd Annual Convention and Exhibition that will take place Nov. 12-15 in Phoenix. You can register and book your hotel room at the special discounted rates. Gifted Education Among Amendments to ESEA Bill
Education Week
States would be required to adopt policies to prevent unnecessary use of restraint and seclusion in schools, and a federal gifted education grant program would be reauthorized for six years, under amendments that were added to the proposed rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Senate education committee unanimously approved the bill April 16. Its next step is debate before the full Senate.

5 Tech Tools That Support Common Core State Standards

According to the 4th Annual Principals' Assessment of Public Education, 95.7 percent of schools in states that have adopted the Common Core State Standards have implemented or are in the process of implementing the standards. Many of those schools are also getting ready to administer the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium assessments for the first time. When Does Nurturing a Gifted Child's Abilities Become Pushing?

Parents of high achieving students are advocates of their child's abilities, commonly at the front lines to ensure that their child has the opportunities for growth. Most often they are correct. But when does nurturing and accommodating become pushing? Carol Bainbridge, a gifted child expert, says "nurturing is child-centered, while pushing is adult-centered. When we nurture we follow the child's lead, but when we push, we ask the child to follow us, to do what we want him or her to do."
