Feeling Welcomed

Dear friends:
I write to introduce myself to each of you and offer my appreciation for all those who warmly welcomed me in my first week as the executive director of the National Association for Gifted Children. I am excited and happy to join the NAGC team, members and supporters to advocate for high-quality gifted and talented education. The focus of my first weeks is to meet, listen and get to know the dedicated individuals who make up our organization and those we serve. So far, I devoted a significant portion of time to connect with each member of the NAGC Board of Directors and staff over one-on-one meetings and face-to-face video calls.

Association Editor Search: Application Deadline Nears

NAGC
NAGC will soon select the next Association Editor, a three-year volunteer position that begins this fall. The Association Editor shares direction and oversight of the association's publication activities in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the National Office. The Association Editor also chairs the NAGC Publications Committee, made up of at-large members appointed by the NAGC president as well as the editors of Gifted Child Quarterly, Parenting for High Potential and Teaching for High Potential.

Application deadline is June 15. Find more information online.

Doubling Your Support

Did you know that many companies — large and small — have employee matching gift programs? What that means is that for every dollar an employee gives to a designated charity, the company will match it one for one, essentially doubling your donation. But most companies will only take recommendations from their own employees. That means we need to get talking! NAGC members may work for some of these companies or have family members, friends and associates that do. We need you (and them) to put forward NAGC's name as a worthy charity for your company's matching gifts program. Will you pass on the word? We've started a list of companies that offer such programs, but the easiest way is to contact your company's human resources department and find out if your company offers a matching gifts program for its employees. If you have questions or need help in getting started, please contact Lyndi at NAGC.

Want to know if one or more of your favorite speakers, aka "Gifted Rock Stars," are scheduled for the 62nd Annual NAGC Convention? That info is just a click away on the NAGC Convention website, where you can browse by speaker, day, strand or topic. On the site you'll find information about pre-convention workshops and offsite educational programs, concurrent education sessions, speaker biographies and presentations, exhibitors, keynotes and special events and meetings. Information is updated each day and the same information will appear in the Convention app that launches in October! A "Quick Start Guide" is provided if you are new to the site.

Online registration with early bird rates and lower rates for NAGC members is now open. The NAGC website includes prices and links to registration, registration forms, and hotel reservation site.

Special Instruction Can Be a Necessity for Gifted Students

For the parents of a prodigy the question is not whether such gifts are a blessing or a curse, but whether they can give the child the opportunity to explore his or her area of strength. For kindergartners who are extremely capable of learning music, instruction from a group of teachers specialized in young, gifted souls, an education that follows their own strengths and interests, is practically a necessity. Many of them never stop singing.

Poorest Students Often Miss Out on Gifted Classes

What does it take to find the country's most promising, academically talented students? In wealthier enclaves, where gifted education programs often flourish, it can be simply a matter of testing to cream the best from a pool of youngsters who have had high-quality early enrichment and academics. But with more than half of public school students now coming from low-income families and deepening concentrations of poverty in many communities, standard screening and pullout programs may not be enough to find and support the most vulnerable talented students.

Board Shortens Common Core-Aligned Tests Known as PARCC
The Washington Post
The Common Core-aligned tests that made their debut in 11 states and the District this spring will be approximately 90 minutes shorter next year, a change that comes after parents, teachers and school administrators expressed frustration with the amount of time devoted to the new exams. The governing board of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers voted to shorten the tests. The board, made up of state superintendents, also voted to give the exams during one 30-day testing window near the end of the school year.

Let the Kids Learn through Play

Twenty years ago, kids in preschool, kindergarten and even first and second grade spent much of their time playing: building with blocks, drawing or creating imaginary worlds, in their own heads or with classmates. But increasingly, these activities are being abandoned for the teacher-led, didactic instruction typically used in higher grades. In many schools, formal education now starts at age 4 or 5.

Mobile Program Reaches Students to Help Fill Gaps in Arts Education

As arts programs have been cut back in some districts, nonprofits and community groups have stepped in to fill the gap in school arts education. Side Street is one of more than 40 community arts organizations that partner with the Pasadena Unified School District. Every third-grader in the district, as well as a group of fifth graders, participate in Side Street's instruction. Students learn woodworking and art skills like design, fabrication and creative problem solving.

Black and Hispanic Child Prodigies Are Often Neglected in Scholarship

The terms "geniuses" and "prodigies" are often used interchangeably, but there are important and subtle nuances. While both are rare — perhaps less than 1 percent of the population — genius often refers to intellectual and academic endeavors, while prodigy refers to talent and creativity. But being a child prodigy is both a blessing and a curse. The fruits of such gifts certainly benefit society.
