An Inside Look at the NAGC Convention

By Donna Campbell, Chair of the Convention Local Arrangements Committee and George Betts, NAGC President Elect and Convention Program Chair
It's always good to turn to the "insiders" when making a decision and the NAGC Convention is no exception! We asked two NAGC members who are veteran Convention attendees and have been part of the planning team working to ensure your NAGC Convention experience is first-rate. Donna Campbell is the chair of the Arizona Local Arrangements Committee and serves on the board of the Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented. George Betts is NAGC President-Elect and in that position serves as Convention Program Chair. Let's hear their thoughts on what sets the NAGC Convention apart and why you need to register today!

How many NAGC Conventions have you attended and what role did you have in gifted and talented education?

Donna: I have been attending conventions since the 1980s first as a gifted specialist, then as a district coordinator of gifted programs and services, teacher/facilitator of a program for highly gifted students, and as president and board member for the Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented.

George: I have attended 33 NAGC Conventions since 1980. I started attending when I was a teacher/counselor and coordinator of alternative education at Arvada West High School. I had some knowledge about gifted education but I knew there was much more for me to learn. I made connections and friendships that first year that are still important to me today.

TALENT Act Introduced in House — Your Help Needed

Reps. Jared Polis (D-CO-2) and David Young (R-IA-3) introduced H.R. 2960, the TALENT Act, on July 7. The bill, which is the companion to S.363 introduced in the Senate earlier this year, would increase federal attention to the needs of high achieving and high-potential students though increased teacher awareness, investment in research and dissemination of best practices in gifted education, greater attention to high-ability students in poverty and by requiring states to report advanced achievement data, disaggregated by subgroup.

We now need your help to gather cosponsors for this bipartisan bill. Cosponsorship is an important way that members of Congress indicate their support for an issue, which in turn, can open critical conversations with congressional leaders. Please contact your representative and urge him/her to show support for the needs of gifted students by becoming a cosponsor of H.R. 2960.

Online Election Open until July 14
NAGC
NAGC Individual and Lifetime members may vote for the vacancies on the NAGC Board of Directors via the online ballot they received (a reminder email was sent earlier this week). Those with memberships in Networks with elections will also have an opportunity to vote for Network chairs and chairs-elect.

As you complete your ballot submission, you are encouraged to consider serving on an NAGC organizational committee. Committee service begins in September, but your application is due by July 14. NAGC depends on the efforts and expertise of its volunteers to advocate, develop relevant publications and products and so much more. We couldn't do it without you! If you are already serving on a committee and would like to continue, please fill out the online form. Visit the Call for Committee Members to apply for service on one of NAGC's important committees.

So the difference between telling a kid "You did a great job" and "You are smart" isn't subtle. To Test or Not to Test? That Is the Growing Question

Recently, New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan took a bold step in the debate over whether students can opt out of standardized testing. She vetoed a bill that would have allowed students to do so. Hassan's move comes in the wake of a heated national debate on whether students should have the right to opt out of standardized testing that is used as a measure of accountability for schools. This year, with the implementation of the Common Core, many states moved to new accountability tests.
