From Where I Sit
Observations of the 61st Annual NAGC Conference

Experiencing the 61st Annual NAGC Convention during my second year as NAGC President has allowed for some different kinds of observations to be made when compared to my first year in the role. My first year experience was very primal and personal. NAGC was held last year in Indianapolis, my stomping grounds for 16 years, where my children grew up, and where I have many friends and longstanding colleagues. I could not escape the immediacy of all the experiences. Because of these close connections, I felt considerable nostalgia and worry. The 2013 Convention was a great success and my concerns were unfounded.

Twice Exceptional Learners: Share the Articles from Gifted Child Quarterly
NAGC
As part of its commitment to special populations of gifted students, NAGC has arranged with Gifted Child Quarterly's publisher to again "open" the fall 2013 issue on twice-exceptional students to the public. Although NAGC members have free access to the online version of Gifted Child Quarterly (GCQ), non-members must pay to download the article PDFs, which often limits the number of articles most K-12 educators read. From now to the end of December, the special issue is available for free download. NAGC urges you to share the journal link with school counselors, special education professionals, assessment teams and others who work with twice-exceptional learners and who would not otherwise be familiar with GCQ. It's an opportunity to raise awareness and start a conversation about the needs of an often overlooked group of learners.

Moody's Mega Math Challenge

NAGC
Moody's Mega Math (M3) Challenge is an Internet-based, math modeling competition for high school students. The contest is free and open to high school juniors and seniors in 45 U.S. states and D.C. Working in teams of three to five, participants must solve an open-ended, applied problem focused on a realistic issue — in 14 hours. Scholarships totaling $125,000 toward the pursuit of higher education are awarded to the top teams. The real-world focus of the competition introduces students to applied math as a powerful problem-solving tool and, potentially, as a viable and exciting profession. Challenge weekend is set for Feb. 28 and March 1, 2015. Registration is now open. View complete details, sample problems, rules and archives of previous challenges.

Punishing achievement in our schools
National Review
President Obama's contempt for the Constitution, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's unfortunate disregard of that document, have been loudly and justly decried by critics of executive overreach. Less heralded, but equally troubling, is the mission creep of the Office for Civil Rights as it works to reshape the education world and to right whatever alleged wrongs it thinks it sees. All of these officials and agencies are seeking to accomplish policy goals that they believe are good for America. But they are playing fast and loose with their job descriptions and responsibilities under law.

Are Child Prodigies Genuinely Gifted?
The Daily Beast
A quick search for "child prodigy" will give you a flood of results: kids of different ages, who can paint like Picasso, make music like Mozart or write prolific poetry like Sylvia Plath. It seems like almost anyone under the age of 10 can immediately be labeled a prodigy, solely for being slightly ahead (and more dedicated) than their peers. So, are children revered more for their work because of their talent or for their age? Or, are they not even responsible for their works at all?

Channeling Springsteen: Teachers as Performers

When Amanda Siepiola steps into her second-grade classroom, she channels two role models. "I'm a big Bruce Springsteen fan," says Siepiola, a teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School in Washington, D.C. "And when I go to his concerts, I end up leaving and saying, 'I want to teach like him.' " The other role model is Siepiola's own English teacher from the 1990s at Clinton High School in upstate New York: Ms. Hepburn.

Is a Creativity Renaissance Coming to America's Classrooms?

When George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind act in 2002, he became the target of criticism by educators from all branches of the U.S. educational system. Arts instructors in particular were dismayed by the policies enacted by the legislation. They argued that the initiative placed too much importance on assessment and testing and sidelined arts education. Twelve years later, many arts programs are still reeling from the shift.
