From Where I Sit
Cheers to the 60th

Tracy L. Cross, NAGC President
As the new NAGC president, this year's convention was positively invigorating. Having worked and lived in Indiana for 16 years I felt a strong sense of nostalgia for an entire week. My wife's and my four children were raised in Indiana and we have developed many friendships there. Spending several days in Indianapolis among longstanding friends, new friends, and colleagues who share my passion for students with gifts and talents was a very moving experience for me.

Now as we approach Thanksgiving and the holidays in December, it is especially fitting to sit back and appreciate the efforts of those who made time to join us as attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and volunteers.

New Blog for GT Researchers and Practitioners

The Editors of Gifted Child Quarterly are pleased to announce the launch of a new Gifted Child Quarterly (GCG) blog. The blog provides an outlet for scholars and practitioners in the field of gifted education to discuss articles published in GCQ as well as issues related to publishing research in the social sciences. The blog, maintained by Gifted Child Quarterly co-editors, D. Betsy McCoach and Del Siegle, is also expected to promote a wider audience for the research published in GCQ.

In addition, the blog includes video clips of authors of many of the research articles published in Gifted Child Quarterly. The videos focus on the research findings and the implications for gifted students. Additional videos will be added with each new issue of the journal.

The blog is accessible from the Gifted Child Quarterly website and the GCQ page on the NAGC website.

Finding the Perfect Gift for your Curious Child
The manufacturers' recommended ages on toys and games may not be useful when shopping catalogs and toy aisles for gifted children. Additionally, games that look exciting from the box, can be repetitive after one playing. Games and toys allow children to explore different ways of thinking, moving, and interacting with friends and family members. That is why NAGC runs a recommended toy article annually, in Parenting for High Potential., NAGC's publication for parents and caregivers. Check out the 2013 Toy List here. Lists from previous years are also posted on the website. There is also a PDF to share with friends and family (or the jolly elf himself!). Thanks to the Sycamore School in Indianapolis for their help in testing this year.

Updated State Policy and Practice Data Now Available
State data from the recently released 2012-2013 State of the States in Gifted Education report is available on the NAGC website. Selected information in six key areas (general state information, accountability, identification, training, mandates and funding, and supportive state policies) has been posted in table format, which allows users to compare data across states. The NAGC highlights of the report, State of the Nation, is also available, along with the data tables, in downloadable pdf format.

The full State of the States report is available on a flashdrive from the NAGC online bookstore.

Convention Attendees Have Access to Recorded Sessions

It's fitting that more than 60 sessions were recorded at the NAGC 60th Annual Convention in Indianapolis earlier this month. Convention attendees can log on to the NAGC Live Learning Center to access the files that are synced to the presenters' PowerPoint presentations. Those not able to join us in Indy can sample a few of the presentations and then purchase the recordings.

Texas State Board to Consider Looser Graduation Requirements

The argument over looser high school graduation requirements in Texas shifts from the Capitol to the State Board of Education. At the heart of that dispute will be whether students will have to take advanced algebra. Last spring, Texas lawmakers voted unanimously for legislation that retooled high school graduation requirements to give students, particularly those not headed to college, more flexibility to choose their courses.
