IBWA responds to EWG's 2011 Bottled Water Scorecard
WaterTechOnline.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The International Bottled Water Association has issued a position statement in response to the Environmental Working Group's 2011 Bottled Water Scorecard, which graded 173 bottled water manufacturers based on their disclosure of water sources and treatment methods. According to IBWA, the grades assigned to the bottled water brands were based solely on EWG's subjective criteria and the report found no violations of any federal labeling laws or regulations. Furthermore, federal law requires that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's bottled water regulations be as protective of the public health as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's tap water standards, IBWA stated. Cynthia Sass, MPH, MA, RD, CSSD, wrote on ABCNews.com, "I remember my very first sip of coffee. It was like nothing I'd ever tasted before and I was instantly enamored. That's why I'm thrilled to spread the word as a nutritionist that java is actually good for you. Coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet. It is a plant food after all, and regular consumption has also been linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and liver disease." More

Small business is hiring, but very carefully
Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the U.S. economy gains momentum, small business employment is lagging behind other drivers of the recovery. Past rebounds were led by companies with fewer than 500 employees as they added full-time workers. Now some owners say they'll rely on part-time help and push their staffs to be more productive as they wait as much as a year for demand to improve. In the first 12 months following the recession that ended in November 2001, small businesses added 81,000 workers. After the most recent downturn, companies cut 480,000 during a comprable time period, according to data from ADP Employer Services. More
