Colombia could recuperate historic coffee production levels in four years if special varieties are planted, said the country's growers federation, in financial publication Portafolio. Fedecafe president Luis Genaro Muñoz said that if the country cultivates strains of roya fungus and excess humidity-resistant coffee, then 11 million 321-pound bags of coffee could be produced per year. A recent study (via the WSJ's Ideas Market blog) following 20,000 students from kindergarten through eighth grade found no link between the presence of snack-food machines and weight gain from fifth to eighth grades. Swap-O-Matic: Vending machine based on the barter economy

DC Mayor Gray proposes updating vending regulations

Washington, D.C., Mayor Vincent C. Gray has proposed new regulations that update the 30-year-old rules governing street vending — including food trucks — in the District of Columbia. The proposed regulations, issued by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, would open up additional locations for sidewalk vending, reflect new design standards for vending carts and update a rule originally designed for ice-cream trucks that currently exposes some of the newer food trucks that operate in the District to potential citations.
