Why your small business has the motivational edge over big companies
Small Business Trends
Are you looking to hire employees this year, wondering how you can keep the employees you do have from heading off for greener pastures, or struggling for ways to keep them motivated? Sales prospecting: The first step with the screener
By Amanda Puppo
Let's face it, the toughest part of cold calling isn't making the sales pitch, it is actually getting the opportunity to talk to the decision maker so that you can make that sales pitch. So how do we as salespeople increase skill and our ratios of dials-to-decision maker conversations? The influencer or decision maker to sell refreshment services to in companies with 50-plus staff size is typically the office manager or head of HR/facilities. Most decision makers, particularly in larger businesses, are protected by one or even two layers of screeners: a receptionist and/or a department administrative person. Since they are the gatekeepers for the person you need to talk to, it is important that you gain them as allies. In fact, winning over the screener can actually turn that cold call into a warm call when you finally do reach the right person.

Helping small coffee growers fatten up the 'thin months'
The Wall Street Journal
Some people buy coffee designated "fair trade" because the higher price contributes to improved living standards for small farmers in Latin America — to a point. Profits from a fair-trade coffee crop can support a family for many months, although not all the way until the next harvest season. Then the farm families live through a period of food insecurity so common it has its own name: "los meses flacos," the thin months. "Fair trade is a step in the right direction, but small farmers simply cannot rely on coffee alone to sustain their families and farms," says Pierre Ferrari, president and CEO of Heifer International, a nonprofit based in Little Rock, Ark., that focuses on hunger and poverty.
