How cleaning out the coffee pot at work could help protect you from a layoff

Making yourself indispensable — the person who knows how to use that buggy software system or who has personal contacts with a key client — can't hurt. Research has even shown that schmoozing over lunch or e-mailing your boss about last night's baseball game may help. Meanwhile, a new academic study helps to validate the idea that having a good attitude and being a good corporate citizen also could help inoculate workers when the ax falls.

Entrepreneur Dave Asprey claims he got the idea during a hiking trip in Tibet when he had tea containing yak butter. Back in America, he experimented with coffee instead — a wise move since coffee more or less dominates the Western Hemisphere.

Corporate social responsibility: The ultimate marketing tool
European CEO
Implementing CSR policies can go a long way in promoting both customer and employee engagement. Incorporating CSR in a business model acts as a mechanism to reach out to the public in new ways; ways that get people talking, sharing and ultimately consuming more. Projecting the image of ethical practices, such as sustainable sourcing, fair treatment of employees and being charitable, can focus the public's spotlight onto these praiseworthy policies, and so onto the firm from which they come.
