Why the swipe fee 'settlement' is far from settled
Retail's BIG Blog
Craig Shearman, the National Retail Federation's VP of Government Affairs PR, writes, "When I first got 'volunteered' to do PR on swipe fees half a dozen years ago, I thought this was a subject for what my old boss on Capitol Hill used to call 'green eye-shaded accountants.' Who could care about a couple of percentage points on a credit or debit card transaction? It turns out credit card swipe fees add up to $30 billion a year and have tripled over the past decade. Retailers have been fighting these fees for years, but a key turning point in that battle is coming in the next couple of months."

NYC's new drink rules add wrinkle to coffee orders
The New York Times
Call it the coffee conundrum: What to do when new sugary drink rules come between a harried, half-awake New Yorker and a morning cup? When Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ban on the sale of large sugary drinks goes into effect after months of public debate over the measure, its impact on beverages like soda will be clear: no more jumbo colas. But coffee drinkers, and those who pour them, are likely to face a thicket of complications as varied as the lattes, macchiatos and Americanos on a Starbucks menu.

GE brings facial recognition to morning coffee
Digital Trends
GE's Brilliant Brew truck wasn't churning out just your average caffeine fix — the crew came equipped with robot coffee makers that will take your photo and draw them onto the foam as latte art. The best way to understand the simple technology behind this is to think of the coffee makers as printers. Baristas will start out by snapping a photo of you or a logo on your business card with their webcam. Then, a program simplifies the outline of your face or logo and draws them out as X, Y and Z axes. Using this data, the coffee maker takes a syringe of coffee and draws out the axes atop your latte foam as one would with ink on paper. Essentially, the machine prints out the lines on the foam to craft a unique, personalized drink.

The wonders of coffee
The Exponent Telegram
What is it about coffee that makes it such a popular beverage for millions of people around the world? It's not exactly the titillating taste, but it's definitely aromatic, particularly before it's been brewed. And the strength of a cup of joe often helps to determine whether we like it or not. Maybe it's the caffeine that comes in every cup of coffee we imbibe. Coffee imparts a little jolt of energy and helps one to stay awake. It also, according to some studies, gives us more mental acuity.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Colorado coffee entrepreneurs believe in following their product back to the source
Boulder Daily Camera
Coffee is a common breakfast drink for many Americans, but coffee drinkers rarely think about the origin of their morning pick-me-up beyond the grocery aisle. A cup of coffee triggers few to think about the living conditions or salaries of the growers. At Conscious Coffees, however, that is at the forefront of its roasting and distributing. Mel Evans-Glenn co-founded Conscious Coffees and its trading co-op, Cooperative Coffees, with her husband, Mark Glenn, 16 years ago to bring fair trade coffee to Boulder, Colo.
