Signs of springtime growth in business
Fox Business
Spring is a time of growth both literally and figuratively. Just as spring showers coax the dormant bulbs to bloom into flowers, research indicates that the capital needed to spur business growth is flowing better than it has in a long time. There has been a steady climb in small business loan approvals in 2013. As the economy slowly ticks up, banks both large and small are jumping back into the small business credit markets.

Coffee Origin Profile — Kenya
Kenya Coffee is known for its rich body, fragrant aroma, and intense flavor. Kenya is just south of the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia. Coffee was introduced into Kenya by way of Reunion (Bourbon) Island at the end of the 19th century.

Kenya AA refers to the highest ranking for coffee harvested in Kenya. Generally the largest beans are awarded the Kenya AA classification; the larger beans have higher oil content. Kenya AA beans are harvested from the premium Arabica coffee plants and not the less flavorful Robusta plant.

Coffee group aims to launch 3 origin-specific futures contracts
The coffee industry said it is aiming to launch new futures contracts for higher quality beans grown in Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, which could be active by as early as 2014. The "C" contract that trades on ICE Futures U.S. provides a benchmark price for global Arabica coffee, while the Liffe exchange provides the benchmark for the lower costing robusta coffee, but the National Coffee Association Coffee Working Group is looking to create contracts that will be specific to three main origins.

Coffee exporters upbeat on high Robusta demand
The Economic Times
Though coffee prices continue to move in a lower range, rising demand for the robusta variety may provide some relief to exporters. High demand and the prospects of a lower crop in Vietnam, the largest producer of robusta coffee, are expected to stoke a rally in prices. Arabica prices have crashed in the world market owing to a bumper crop in Brazil.

As coffee rust devastates Latin America, Colombia's Cenicafé leads the resistance
The Huffington Post
The British have long favored tea as their caffeinated beverage of choice, but another drink had its moment during the glory days of the British empire — coffee. Now the shift could be happening again in the "New World," as coffee rust strikes at crops across Central and South America. A recent outbreak is causing the worst devastation since the disease was first spotted in the Western Hemisphere in 1970; Guatemala has declared a national emergency, 2013-2014 harvests in some parts of Costa Rica may be half of what they were last year and there are troubling reports of the disease in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Mexico.

The unseen bean: Roasting coffee in the dark
The Huffington Post
When you lose the use of one sense, the others become heightened. That's certainly true for Gerry Leary of Boulder, Colo. Leary has been blind since birth, yet he operates a successful coffee roasting business and a café near Boulder's main pedestrian mall, Pearl Street. Leary learned to roast coffee by gauging the sound and smell of the beans, and his sense of coffee taste is second to none. He's honed his sensibility to a fine point, and has become a supreme connoisseur and master craftsman. "There are other ways to take in your world beyond sight," he says. "You have to be open, and you have to adapt."
