Single-cup coffee reduces 'waste,' bean demand
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Expanding sales of single-cup coffee packets may trim bean consumption by reducing the amount that typically ends up as beverage "waste" from a larger pot, according to Illycaffe SpA. Demand for coffee may decline 1 percent in the long term as the single-cup servings allow consumers more control over bean usage than traditional drip-coffee makers, Chief Executive Officer Andrea Illy said in a recent interview in New York. Coffee drinkers using drip machines may make a whole pot, while only having one or two cups, throwing the rest out and using more beans than they needed, he said. More

Restocking the old vending machine with live bait and prescription pills
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Long a cultural icon, the vending machine is fading from the American landscape. The numbers are bleak: Traditional vending machines disappeared from 134,000 locations between 2007 and 2010, according to the latest available data from Vending Times. Sales from vending machines sank more than 11 percent, to $42.2 billion in the same period. Amid the changes, a new group of entrepreneurs is trying to build a new vending industry, outfitting machines with high-tech features, and filling them with live bait, prescription drugs, electronics and even art. Seeking a sustainable path for coffee, and coffee farmers, in Haiti
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Todd Carmichael, a founder of the coffee roaster La Colombe Torrefaction, is an interesting mix of entrepreneur, adventurer, showman (a reality TV show on coffee hunting is coming) and philanthropist. His latest venture combining all of these traits is a line of coffee, called Lyon, sales of which will generate money for environmental initiatives supported by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. The coffee blend includes beans that Carmichael is obtaining from Haitian sources that, he says, sidestep predatory loan sharks and middlemen who have hampered the climb out of poverty by Haitian coffee growers.
