83 percent of US adults drink coffee

No doubt about it, Americans love their coffee. According to the National Coffee Association's National Coffee Drinking Trends market research study, coffee consumption rose 5 percent this year with 83 percent of the U.S. adults reporting they drink coffee. At the same time, daily consumption remained steady at 63 percent, while those who drink coffee at least once per week was up slightly to 75 percent.

Drinking coffee halves the risk of liver cancer
Coffee consumption reduces the risk of liver cancer by approximately 50 percent, the results of a meta-analysis published in the online journal BMC Gastroenterology show. A total of 16 studies published before May 2012 were included in the analysis. Closer examination of the results suggested that the magnitude of the protective effective of drinking coffee was higher among men than women and also differed between patients of Asian and European origin.

Once upon a time, soda was king of the beverage world. But, increasingly, consumers have been turning away from sugary soft drinks for bottled waters to quench their thirsts. According to Beverage Digest, U.S. soda consumption was at its peak in 1998, when the average American drank 54 gallons that year. Conversely, we drank just 42 gallons of water during the same period. Today, the average American consumes 44 gallons of pop and nearly 58 gallons of water per year.

Energy drinks maintain buzz
The dynamic sales growth of energy drinks and shots — 60 percent between 2008 and 2012 — is expected to maintain momentum in coming years, according to a new report from Packaged Facts. A new report by Center for Global Development Senior Fellow Kimberly Elliot gives a snapshot of the global market for fair trade goods. The fair trade market has expanded rapidly — at $7 billion, the value of fair trade goods sold worldwide in 2011 was six times larger than seven years before, though still a pittance in the context of the global commodities trade. One interesting point made in the report is that, in the U.S. at least, when we talk about fair trade-certified goods, we're largely talking about coffee.

Research: Consumers take responsibility for 'green' actions but aren't following through
