Whitbread moves FD to lead Costa drive overseas

British leisure group Whitbread is moving highly-regarded finance chief Chris Rogers to head up its coffee shop chain Costa Coffee, with a remit to deliver ambitious overseas expansion plans. Costa is already Britain's biggest coffee shop brand with almost 1,400 shops and has a further 800 units in 25 overseas markets, including China and India. The appointment of Rogers, who has been Whitbread's finance director for the past seven years, is likely to heighten talk that Costa could eventually be demerged. More

Kraft turning to drinks to quench growth in grocery business

Though food is in its name, Kraft Foods Inc. is looking to its beverage business as a main ingredient of growth for its North American grocery business, which is splitting off from Kraft's faster-growing snacks brands later this year. Of particular focus within its beverages division is its refreshment business, which includes Crystal Light powdered drinks, Capri Sun juices and a new hit product MiO, a liquid flavoring that's splashed into drinks. Kraft sees the division, currently with $1.5 billion in annual sales, growing at high-single-digit or double-digit rates going forward, up from mid-single digits in the last couple of years. More

A global Internet survey by Nielsen finds that nearly two-thirds of the people who are willing to pay more to deal with socially responsible companies are young — under 40. But overall, slightly less than half (46 percent) of consumers are willing to make that extra expense. Sixty-three percent of global, socially-conscious consumers are under age 40, Nielsen reported. They consult social media when making purchase decisions and are most concerned about environmental, educational and hunger causes. More
