How small businesses can reinvest their tax refunds to drive results
The Huffington Post
U.S. tax laws give small business owners numerous opportunities to earn significant refunds on their taxes. For instance, businesses that record a net loss in one year can carry back that loss against profits in previous years, offsetting their previous profits and earning a refund on those taxes. This refund can be an important infusion of cash for a small business. For some that are struggling just to get by, it can be the only way the business manages to pay employees and keep the lights on. For others with a little more of a safety net, a big tax refund is a major opportunity. There are numerous beneficial moves a business can make with this cash.

Don't let desperation drive your decisions
By Anne Rose
You're short-handed and desperately need to hire another employee, so you hire the first breathing person that mails in a job application. Or maybe your bank account is desperately low and you need a client fast, so you accept the first prospective customer who calls on the phone. We've all been in those situations and know the fear and panic that can set in. But when desperation drives an impetuous decision, it seldom solves your initial problem and usually adds more problems. The wrong person is worse than no person.

Coffee industry aims to keep its farmers from going hungry
Humanosphere
One paycheck is all many coffee farmers get each year, which inevitably creates "los meses flacos" — the thin months. All around the world, from Nicaragua to Rwanda, the farming families that provide us with the caffeine beans we need for our morning jolt suffer long bouts of hunger. The income many of these coffee farmers receive is usually less than their annual spending needs, which means harvest season is routinely followed by seasonal hunger and malnutrition, according to a report by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

The Space Station gets a coffee far
NPR
In space, all they have is instant. "For an instant coffee, it's an excellent instant coffee," says Vickie Kloeris, who manages the space station's food supply for NASA. Astronauts are allotted up to three freeze-dried cups (pouches, actually) a day, and Kloeris says it's "extremely popular." But, she adds, "Can it compete with brewed espresso? No." And that is a problem, particularly for the Italian astronauts who occasionally come to the station. In 2013, Luca Parmitano reportedly said the only food he missed from Earth was espresso coffee. Now a resupply mission with a Space Age espresso maker is coming to the rescue of Italy's current astronaut aboard the space station, Samantha Cristoforetti.

Struggling with community engagement? Try partnering with a nonprofit
GreenBiz
Engagement with communities is an important aspect of business sustainability and key to a healthy relationship amongst stakeholders. Ensuring that community engagement is done in an effective and quality way, however, can be difficult. It is important to remember that although your business may have incredible resources and expertise in your particular field, those do not necessarily translate well to community development. One of the best ways of participating in a meaningful way is to partner with a quality non-profit and help them to provide their services through their expertise.
