Who killed strategic planning?
By Michael J. Berens
For some time now, strategic planning has been dying a slow death. Rapid acceleration in the rate of change and innovation along with instability in the global economy have made long-range forecasting obsolete. That may come as welcome news to many executives and managers who have long questioned the value of developing strategic plans. Still, it begs the question: Did strategic planning die of natural causes or was it the victim of abuse? Have organizations finally rid themselves of an outmoded ritual, or have they lost a valuable tool due to neglect?

Findings in Hepatology, a journal published by Wiley on behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, show that tea, fruit juice and soft drink consumption are not linked to cirrhosis mortality risk. New study shows that green tea boosts working memory
Forbest
If green tea were a celebrity, it would already sit near the tippy top of the A-list. Its active ingredients have been linked to an array of health benefits, including weight loss, decreasing anxiety and stopping the growth of cancer cells. And now new research adds "memory enhancer" to the list. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland conducted a simple experiment in which they gave a group of participants a beverage containing 27.5 grams of green tea extract, or a whey protein drink designed to taste like green tea (the participants weren't told which beverage they were drinking).

Asia drought strains tea producers, stirs talk of price hikes
NBC News
A long dry season has left Asia's premier tea-growing regions parched and could lead to a rise in tea prices, analysts say. The drought across Sri Lanka in the first three months of 2014 has contributed to a 50-percent fall in tea production, industry sources said. "Sri Lanka is the second largest exporter of tea at 300 million tonnes," said Standard Chartered analyst Nirgunan Tiruchelvam.

Craft brew: Why your morning coffee can now be as complicated as you like
The Washington Post
As a culture, we've embraced the pleasures of the palate in so many areas, but not in our coffee cups. In dining rooms, at cocktail bars, down at the beer hall, in grocery stores and even at the ballpark, chefs and mixologists and managers are striving to upgrade their offerings to satisfy all of the discriminating eaters. But Americans have dug deep bunkers around their coffee shops, fending off assaults that threaten to permanently change the culture of caffeine with brewing methods that actually bring out the best in the beans — even if they're not as simple (or as quick) as filling a paper cup from a large brewing tower at the corner deli.
