Small business owners are a bit more optimistic, spend more time working on taxes
The Associated Press via The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Small business owners are slowly growing more confident about their companies and the economy — but they're also still cautious about hiring and expanding. American Express surveyed small business owners from late February through early March, and found that 34 percent expect their businesses to grow during the next six months regardless of how the economy fares. But close to half the owners surveyed — 44 percent — said they have no plans to hire or may cut their staff in the next six months. More

Coffee prices fall to lowest level in 18 months
The Associated Press via The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Coffee prices fell to their lowest level in 18 months on expectations that Brazilian growers will produce a robust harvest. Coffee fell 4.5 cents to end at $1.747 per pound. That's the lowest level since Oct. 7, 2010, when the price was $1.7345 per pound. Good weather during the growing season has triggered speculation that Brazil will produce large quantities of coffee when the harvest gets under way in June. That is expected to offset lower production in Colombia, which has had large amounts of rainfall. More

Beverages Industry bottled water market under attack
Marketwire via MarketWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Beverages Industry find themselves under attack once again. After seeing government anti-obesity campaigns ban the sale of soda in schools, groups are now focusing on bottled water as their next target. Chris Hogan, International Bottled Water Association vice president of communications, said in a statement "ban on the sale of bottled water on college campuses restricts freedom of choice for students to choose one of the healthiest beverages available in vending machines." Hogan added, "Removing the students' freedom to choose packaged water is a serious issue. Telling students that they can or cannot buy bottled water is a step backwards, especially with the growing rates of obesity and diabetes in the U.S." More

Vending machines seek image upgrade
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Japan's ubiquitous vending machines took some abuse last year — not the pounding they might get when they fail to deliver goods that have been paid for — but verbal abuse. The machines were criticized for gulping down valuable energy at a time when the country was trying to save every watt as nuclear powers plants went offline in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. It was a stern rebuke to the industry. And the industry says it has reformed, ramping up efforts to cut energy used, and to play a greater role in helping communities respond to emergencies like last year's mammoth quake and tsunami. How to: Use vending machine snacks in home cooking
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Whether or not we like to admit it, we've all been there. Probably sometime between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Lunch is a distant memory and dinner is still a way away, but the snack attack has hit and you're hungry. As you stare at yourself in the plastic reflection of the vending machine and attempt to rationalize choosing the deliciously crunchy Goldfish or chewy, red Swedish Fish over the bag of Trail Mix, remember that it is A-OK to splurge on those salty, sweet snacks, especially if you have just a few handfuls of them now and save the rest for later. If you manage to save a handful or two of your favorite vending machine snack, bring it into the kitchen with you and incorporate it into your everyday dishes. Really. More
