If you can rise, you can shine: Tips for small business success
The Huffington Post
What do female entrepreneurs bring to the table? Quite a bit, as many writers have shown. We remember Mike Michalowicz writing about this very topic three years ago in Open Forum. He reasoned that women in business have a better sense of intuition, patience, and multi-tasking, and are better listeners and practitioners of social media. A year later, Stephanie Burns, CEO of Chic, agreed with the intuition assessment in her Forbes piece, and wrote about collaboration and tenacity as areas where she felt the woman entrepreneur soared.

Despite any perceived advantages, the fact remains: across gender, ethnicity, region and race, success in business takes time, and it is anything but easy. Entrepreneurship for the vast majority involves "sleepless nights, tough conversations and big decisions in the face of uncertainty," as Kelsey Recht wrote on her recent Huffpost piece. It requires more hard work beyond the hard work you just finished doing.

But marketers can't include clickable buy links in their product posts, as they can on other sites like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. And yet, Instagram has been described as "the world's most powerful selling tool."

A coffee crop withers
The New York Times
When coffee rust attacked the farms clinging to the volcanic slopes above this Mayan town, the disease was unsparing, reducing mountainside rows of coffee trees to lattices of gray twigs. During last year's harvest, Román Lec, who grows coffee on a few acres here, lost half his crop. This year, he borrowed about $2,000 for fertilizer and fungicide to protect the plants, as he did last year. But the disease returned, and he lost even more.

10 coffee lessons from Norway's Tim Wendelboe
Village Voice
Tim Wendelboe of Oslo, Norway — famed roaster and educator of the coffee world — recently visited Greenpoint's Budin cafe to address a sold out audience of roughly 50. Despite jet lag and the six hour time difference, he held court for well over an hour on the topic "The Road to Better Coffee." His matter-of-fact account of the myriad challenges coffee farmers, processors and roasters face in improving their product were interspersed with wry observations to punctuate his points. The lecture was geared towards the coffee industry but certainly accessible enough for those on the other side of the counter who are mostly unaware of the tortuous path to a nuanced cup.

How to follow up with prospects
SME Times
Every small business pays great attention to reaching out to new customers, wherever possible, offline or online, at an event or on a social network platform. They place great importance on networking and building connections. They are quick at sending product information whenever a potential prospect requests for it. Everything is right till this point, but when it comes to follow-up, they usually fall behind. After the initial contact, most small businesses prefer to sit back and wait for a reply, which most of the time never comes.

We tested 9 ways of brewing coffee to find the very best method
Huffington Post
With high-end coffee shops on the rise, our coffee options have expanded. Enter one of these establishments, such as WTF Coffee in Brooklyn, and it becomes clear. The question is no longer what kind of coffee you want — dark roast, breakfast blend, etc. — but how you want that coffee made. Between the pour over, French press, siphon pot and Chemex, getting a cup of coffee has become complicated. It got us thinking: what brewing method makes the best cup? There are a plethora of options, most of them fairly affordable too. Should we stick to the classic Mr. Coffee that's been making us coffee all these years, or is it time to make a change? Clearly, we had to find out which brewing method produces the best cup of coffee.

Why rising coffee prices are great for Starbucks
Business Insider
2013 was a rough year for Dunkin' Brands. Same-store sales growth stalled in every segment. On the first-quarter earnings call, CEO Nigel Travis reported another poor quarter but reminded investors about the volatile weather that had a strong effect on peak morning business. Then on April 24, Starbucks made Travis look stupid by reporting record financial results for the quarter ended March 30. Global same-store sales were up 6 percent, net sales increased 9 percent and operating income rose 18 percent. By all accounts the trend was positive, despite Starbucks having to deal with the same headwinds as Dunkin'. If you believe most headlines, however, that trend is about to change due to the rising price of coffee. Don't be fooled. Historically, an increase in the price of coffee has benefited same-store sales growth for Starbucks, just like it did last quarter.

While the health benefits of caffeine are under constant debate and scrutiny, professors at the University of Washington, the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina have found a new argument in favor of consuming more of the stimulant. According to their research, published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, caffeine can help employees resist pressure from higher-ups to do unethical things at work.
