Healthful Shift Ahead for Food at U.S. Schools

Students in Des Moines schools are getting a taste of the changes facing kids across the United States, if Congress cracks down as expected on what can be sold in school cafeterias and vending machines. French fries, nachos, lemonade, Oreos and Pop-Tarts are out. Also gone: ice cream bars and other products that do not meet the district's standards set in 2005 for fat, sugar and sodium. Most soft drinks have disappeared from vending machines. Serving sizes are smaller, too.

plastic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in the manufacturing of children’s sippy cups and bottles starting January 1, UPI reported May 8.

Anyone who doubts that consumers are still worried about the Great Recession need only leaf through the May 18 issue of People magazine. Turn to Page 118, where an advertisement for Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh meats proclaims how they taste “deli fresh. But without the deli counter price.” Three pages after that, an ad for Lean Cuisine frozen foods declares, “We believe in food that’s good for you and good for your wallet.”

Proposal Would Boost Biofuels, Set Emission-Reduction Targets

The Obama administration last week issued a renewable fuel standard proposal aimed at growing the supply of biofuels and for the first time requiring them to meet emission-reduction targets. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson said the new rule is designed to help promote and provide financial assistance to the biofuels industry and to increase the supply of renewable fuels to 36 billion gallons by 2022.
