Brewing technology drives Keurig hype while coffee delivers revenue growth

Keurig Green Mountain brewed an earnings beat thanks to strong coffee pod sales. Keurig — previously Green Mountain Coffee Roasters — reported $1.1 billion in second quarter revenue, up 10 percent from the same period a year ago. Net income came in at $162.1 million, up 22 percent. At $1.03, earnings per share were 9 cents ahead of Wall Street analysts' consensus estimate.

In a good year, the 47-year-old indigenous farmer and his wife — who helps him maintain and harvest the crop — can earn around $4,000 for their organic fair trade coffee, the main source of income for the family of six.

Coffee sales by growers in Vietnam, the biggest producer of robusta beans used by Nestle SA, may slow after stockpiles slumped 54 percent from an all-time high. Drought in Brazil, combined with a crop-harming fungus in Central America, have sent wholesale coffee prices to above $2 per pound for only the second time in the last 15 years on the InterContinental Exchange in New York. But the prices paid on the commodity markets for unroasted beans are still dirt-cheap compared to what the Swiss are charging the rest of the world for their roasted beans.

Even though their share prices have fallen over 11 percent and 7 percent year-to-date, respectively, Starbucks and Dunkin' Brands Group both continue to increase their revenues quarterly as their recently released earnings reports show. In recent months, Starbucks' partnership with Keurig Green Mountain has proven to be a big asset for Starbucks, while Dunkin' Brands Group's Dunkin' Donuts and its coffee continue to play a bigger part within a company that also owns over 7,300 Baskin-Robbins locations. While companies like Dunkin' Brands Group are optimistic on accelerating store growth through coffee sales, Starbucks appears to be moving away from coffee based on some of its recent expansion plans.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Tea and Ready-to-Drink Tea in the U.S.: Retail and Foodservice, 5th Edition" report to their offering.
