Big-data tips for small businesses from eBay's head of data
VentureBeat
Despite the buzz around "customer-centricity" and "big data," the reality is that most companies do not take full advantage of everything they know about their customers or their relationship with them. The questions are typically, “Where do I start?" or, "How much will it cost?" While the scale and resources of a large company can be advantageous, the idea that only giants can leverage data analytics and draw on actionable insights from their customers to grow their business is false. While outsourcing your customer insights is an option, it is not always a best practice. Here are five basic principles for any business to ensure it will be effective in achieving your business goals.

Less Brazilian coffee is expected
The Wall Street Journal
Coffee investors are betting that the world's biggest producer will have fewer beans to sell this year. Brazil has been exporting huge volumes of coffee as the value of its currency has tumbled in relation to the U.S. dollar. The depreciation has encouraged exports by making foreign sales more lucrative, increasing returns when dollar-denominated sales are converted back to the real. Brazil's currency fell to a 12-year low against the dollar in March amid government budget deficits and an uncertain economic outlook.

How to make a gallon of iced coffee in just 15 minutes
The Huffington Post
There are a few different ways to get your hands on a glass of iced coffee, the official caffeinated beverage of summer. You can go out and buy one, but everyone knows it's priced way too high. Another option is to have the foresight to make a batch of cold brew at home, but that means thinking about what you're going to drink tomorrow, today which is very unlikely. There's the quickie method of brewing hot coffee on cold iced cubes. It works, but if not done correctly it's basically just watered down, lukewarm coffee. So, in other words, gross. Or, there's this other option. A really good one. One that lets you make a gallon (or less) of good iced coffee in just 15 minutes. How is this possible you ask? It's all about the ice bath.

A new kind of brew: How Inca Tea went from idea to product
Crain's Cleveland Business
Some research showed purple corn could help with ailments like inflammation and diabetes, though it's not FDA tested, but Ryan Florio thought he could sell the product on taste, if people didn't buy into the health benefits. The corn has some natural sweetness to it, he said. Florio began meeting with a local herbalist to create the blend that would become Inca Tea's first offering: Peruvian Spiced Berry. Inca Tea also currently offers mango, peach and black tea blends.

It's healthy to eat coffee grounds, study shows, so stop throwing that antioxidant-packed goodness away
Bustle
Coffee bounces back and forth between being portrayed as an unhealthful vice and a health-boosting habit. Fortunately, right now, the energy-giving brew appears to be on the upswing. Naturally, this leads to questions about extending coffee's healthy reach. Could the good components be extracted? Which coffees are healthier than others? Is there a particular way you should drink it? Now, researchers have given some attention to our used coffee grounds — you might assume that all the good stuff is pulled out during brewing, but you'd be wrong. In fact, that byproduct is apparently chock full of antioxidants, so it may actually be healthy to eat coffee grounds.

How involved should CEOs be in social causes?
Harvard Business Review
What is the difference between a CEO using the corporate "bully pulpit" to express her or his values, and just being a bully in forcibly imposing those values on others, specifically by threatening or imposing economic sanctions? What are the red lines between passionate protest by prominent individuals, responsible commentary by corporate representatives, and the use of economic power to impose one's values on others?

Authentic corporate social responsibility: Good spin vs doing good
Inside Tucson Business
If you ask a room full of business professionals for a definition of Corporate Social Responsibility, you’re likely to get several different answers. An evolving concept for the last few decades, definitions of CSR can range from a company that promotes environmentally-friendly policies, products, and practices to a small business that runs a weekend car wash to support a local charity. For many companies, the biggest question is whether a CSR program should contribute to the bottom line, and whether a company can — or should — see a PR benefit by self-promoting their efforts.
