Matt Shay wrote in Stores Magazine, "My first day at NRF coincided with our annual Washington Leadership Conference — and there could not have been a better example of how retailers working together can demonstrate the importance of our industry to the nation’s economy. This year’s conference came as the Senate considered financial services reform and an amendment from Majority Whip Richard Durbin requiring the Federal Reserve to determine “reasonable” interchange fees for debit cards. The amendment would also make it easier for retailers to offer a discount for cash, check or debit rather than credit cards, and to set minimum and maximum card purchases." More

Starbucks hopes there is no java jive from contest results

The next time you visit your local Starbucks and there is a big crowd keeping you from ordering a cup of coffee as fast as you would like, consider this: someone in that crowd may have contributed an idea to cutting down on cup waste. Starbucks has teamed up with Betacup, which seeks to find ways to reduce the use of cups that cannot be recycled, for a contest to elicit alternatives to disposable, nonrecyclable cups. The contest was conducted through Jovoto, a company that offer marketers a chance to throw challenges open to large pools of participants, also known as crowdsourcing. More

Concern over soda taxes lingers in industry

The idea of a soda tax isn't going away, despite the beverage industry's success at beating back most initial attempts. From October to May, the percentage of Americans who support a soda tax either somewhat or strongly rose to 29 percent from 24 percent, according to Connecticut based Consumer Edge Research, which surveyed 2,500 households. "The minority is growing," said Bill Pecoriello, chief exective of the research firm and a longtime industry analyst. Soda taxes are "a very real threat to this industry," said Rodger Collins, president of packaged beverages at Dr Pepper Snapple Group. More
