Debit card vote a victory
Stores    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Matt Shay wrote in Stores Magazine, "My first day at NRF coincided with our annual Washington Leadership Conference — and there could not have been a better example of how retailers working together can demonstrate the importance of our industry to the nation’s economy. This year’s conference came as the Senate considered financial services reform and an amendment from Majority Whip Richard Durbin requiring the Federal Reserve to determine “reasonable” interchange fees for debit cards. The amendment would also make it easier for retailers to offer a discount for cash, check or debit rather than credit cards, and to set minimum and maximum card purchases." More

Starbucks hopes there is no java jive from contest results
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The next time you visit your local Starbucks and there is a big crowd keeping you from ordering a cup of coffee as fast as you would like, consider this: someone in that crowd may have contributed an idea to cutting down on cup waste. Starbucks has teamed up with Betacup, which seeks to find ways to reduce the use of cups that cannot be recycled, for a contest to elicit alternatives to disposable, nonrecyclable cups. The contest was conducted through Jovoto, a company that offer marketers a chance to throw challenges open to large pools of participants, also known as crowdsourcing. More

Caribou Coffee may offer a more calming return
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Caribou Coffee could continue to generate more buying interest from growth-oriented investors attracted to the sector. The market correction has left a bitter aftertaste as investors struggle to read the market tea leaves, but coffee stocks seem to be offering a more calming brew as we head into the summer months. Despite some near-term supply concerns in specific producer regions, international coffee bean prices have been slipping in 2010, evident in the downward trend of the iPath Dow Jones — UBS Coffee Subindex Total Return exchange traded note, which reflects potential returns on unleveraged investments in coffee futures. Once simply the world's best-known cartoon, canine detective Scooby-Doo is now also a popular pitchman for pasta, cookies, "fruit" snacks, and other foods marketed to young children. Bottled water — It's time to just say no
Global Shift    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recently, author Peter Gleick sat down with Fresh Air host Terry Gross to discuss his new book Bottled and Sold, in which he answers a lot of questions about bottled water: Where does it come from? Who regulates it? And what happens to all of those plastic bottles? Gleick is a water expert who was named a MacArthur fellow in 2003, so he clearly knows his stuff. And once you hear what he has to say, it will make it hard to purchase another bottle unless you are literally dying of thirst. More
